Gender Diversity in the Treatment of Eating Disorders:
Best Practices and Affirming Care for Transgender,
Gender Diverse and Non-Binary Clients
Friday & Saturday, April 23-24, 2021 | 7 CEUs
[Image removed by sender.]Transgender, gender diverse, and non-binary individuals face significant health disparities, and recent research shows that these communities have a significantly higher risk of developing eating disorders (ED)—as well as a higher prevalence of ED—than their cisgender peers. This year's program will address the need for more competent care for transgender, gender diverse and non-binary clients, as well as provide a deeper understanding of the unique challenges they may face as they navigate recovery.
Please join us as we examine cisgender privilege, care disparities and best practices as we work towards greater gender inclusion and equity in the treatment of eating disorders. Learn more

2021 Program
Do No Harm: Centering Trans and Nonbinary Experiences in Body Positive Movements and Eating Disorder Treatment
Sand C. Chang, PhD, Clinical Director, Octave Health Group
Eating disorder recovery and body positivity work is about liberation, but we cannot provide effective, quality treatment for some to the exclusion of others. Most health care professionals do not learn basic competencies in providing respectful, affirming care to people who exist outside of the gender binary. In this training, the facilitator will address gaps in assessment and treatment, as well as provide concrete recommendations for how to provide clients of all genders with the care they need.
“Don’t Tell Me I Can’t Love My Body” Nuanced Conversations About Trans-Centered Nutrition - Lindsay Birchfield, MS, RD, CD; Vaughn Darst, MS RD; and Kia’ikai (“Kai”) Iguchi, MSc/MS, RD/LD/CD
This moderated panel discussion of RD’s who have worked in various levels of care, from inpatient to outpatient will explore common clinical barriers for gender diverse clients in ED treatment, including their various experiences in different treatment settings and address frequently asked questions/concerns. Additionally, panelists will spend time discussing nutritional considerations including determination of biologically appropriate weight BAW/IBW for transgender and gender nonconforming clients, the impacts of hormone therapy on nutrition, and challenges related to body acceptance
I Hear My Ancestors - “Mé’ėstse Mo’óna’e!”
Shilo M. George, MS, Speaker, Trainer, Łush Kumtux Tumtum Consulting
Presenter Shilo George will share a personal journey highlighting the challenges, chaos, brilliance, and power of relationships in reclaiming; inviting the audience to explore the power of culture, first foods, community, and healing. Participants will examine how the colonial machine has impacted Indigenous minds, bodies, and spirits in the past and present, and be challenged to rethink what healing and justice can look like when one’s body is explored as a sovereign space with the help of culture, community, and ancestry.
Better Informed: Identifying Strengths and Limitations in a Cisnormative Treatment System - Clinical Leadership Panel
This panel presentation and Q&A session with clinical leadership from various treatment programs will inform attendees about the current availability of affirming care for gender diverse clients, and help participants be better prepared to provide affirming care to transgender and gender nonconforming clientele. Clinicians will discuss and share their facility’s perspective on the treatment of gender diverse clients—reflecting on their own process and self-awareness, exploring what it means to become a gender affirming provider, and what this process looks like within the treatment program they represent.
