Subject: [Dreamers] Dreamers and the Election Season
Hello,
I wanted to send a reminder for us all to use inclusive language when we remind students to vote. Adding a simple "if you are able" to the sentence can go a long way toward creating a welcoming environment for all of our students. Please spread the word.
The image below was created by one of our students and we are sharing it on our new Instagram page. Follow us there and on Facebook @uodreamers .
Also below, the sessions posted by the UO Counseling Center with the session for undocumented students highlighted. Finally, I am forwarding some of the action plans that were created by attendees of the recent workshop led by Dr. Eric Garcia, on supporting Dreamers through the election season. I hope you will find them helpful.

Dreamer Election Support: Action Plans
During the event we asked all participants to create action plans, considering various actions they could take in their roles as campus faculty and staff to further the support of Dreamer, undocumented, and immigrant students during this challenging time. Below is a summary of the action plans created by the event participants. Please consider how you might integrate these items into your own work.
* Remember that voting is a privilege and choosing not to vote is a privilege. Be conscious of people who cannot vote in our messaging and interactions with students.
* Send a department-wide email to remind everyone of important resources and services available to Dreamer, undocumented, and immigrant students; consider including election day stress reminder.
* Have conversations with staff about how to support all students, including Dreamers and undocumented students post-election.
* Create time in class for students to talk about how they are doing with the election and with Covid-19. Provide space for people to safely express their views and feelings.
* Provide additional office hours and announce office hours will be available to discuss election related stressors, as well as other life stressors, not just course content.
* Ask: "How are you really?" Engage students in conversations about family strengths ex: How have your families navigated challenges in the past?
* Recognizing the challenges and stressors students are currently facing, give students who reach-out extra time on assignments and extensions without questions asked.
* Host a coping tools & supportive strategies workshop for students before the election. Ensure this curriculum inclusive of undocumented students and cross promote.
* Use the Dreamer Ally sign as a Zoom background.
* Place statements of support on department website pages that emphasize support for students of any immigration status.
* Add statements of support to email signatures with respect to students' immigration status, nation of origin, identity, etc.
* Make sure support for undocumented students is included in diversity, equity and inclusion efforts at the department level.
* Think about petition processes and various records housed in office and consider ways to better protect student privacy/support students through these processes.
* Update language on departmental scholarships to make them more inclusive.
* Normalize information specific to undocumented folks-present all options together ie. FAFSA/ORSAA always presented together. Also, explore ways that financial aid can find leniency during appeals process.
* Increase awareness and promotion of Eric Garcia's role as the UCC's Undocumented Student Support Specialist and identify/promote wellness workshops that are specific to election related stressors.
* The Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence will be offering Tarea Time, Tuesdays 3-5 and this can be a space for Latinx students to receive support in Spanish and English as well as mentoring
Thank you,
Justine

As a member of the UO Dreamers Working Group, I support all students regardless of immigration status or country of origin. I am available to meet with Dreamers privately to discuss resources. Remember, when interacting with faculty, staff, and offices around campus, you are never required to reveal your status. https://www.uoregon.edu/dreamers
