Dear CPSY Community:
In a small effort to continue educating ourselves, today, June 12th, is Loving Day. Loving Day celebrates the 1967 US Supreme Court decision Loving v. Virginia which struck down all anti-miscegenation laws remaining in the U.S. that prohibited different racial groups from marrying each other. The goal of the prohibition was to ban mixing between racial minorities and whites, and especially Blacks and whites. The 1967 decision is particularly salient for and celebrated by multiracial families and children.
Mildred Loving, an African American and Native American woman was pivotal in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement when she and her White husband, Richard Loving successfully challenged Virginia's ban on interracial marriage.
In memory of the long, continuing fight.
Krista
