Dear CPSY students,
As some of you have heard, I'll be retiring from UO on June 16. This was a difficult and painful decision based on economic factors. You may be aware that in recent years, Career NTTFs have been offered low FTE contracts. For the last two years, Beth and the Honors College have been able to increase my FTE to full-time, which I've deeply appreciated. This year that increase wasn't possible given the uncertainty about university enrollment during the COVID-19 outbreak. Low FTE means no health insurance, which isn't a risk my family can take (especially during a pandemic). I hope very much that I'll be able to see you in the future as a pro tem instructor.
I'm expanding my psychotherapy practice, which is currently by telehealth. Within a strength-based feminist, multicultural, and queer-positive framework, it focuses on adults coping with, making meaning of, and grief and loss related to medical conditions (primarily cancer, diabetes, and viral hepatitis), as well as adult/late adolescent family and friends who need support and assistance negotiating their relationship with people with these issues. I'll also see health care providers and first responders with COVID-related stress. After June 16, I'll also be available to see CPHS students.
A little over 20 years ago, Nancy and I presented at Association for Women in Psychology's conference with then-CPSY students Saba Rasheed (Ali) and Krista Gragg (Chronister). As we chatted about my post-licensure job search, Krista announced, "I'll be your career coach!" Not long after, she let me know that a CPSY faculty member was leaving and the program would probably need instructors to fill in while they conducted a search. I wrote a letter of interest, was interviewed, and was surprised to be offered not just a class or two, but a full teaching load for the year, which was followed by another, and so on. Thank you, Krista, Benedict, Ellen, and Beth for changing my career trajectory!
I've so enjoyed my relationships with all of you, whether in the classroom, in supervision, writing together, presenting together, co-teaching, talking about internship applications, staffing your students, observing your teaching, consulting about clients, going for walks, or having coffee on 13th, and yes, even reading your syllabi. I'm frequently overwhelmed by your passion and commitment, and the sophistication of your approach to clients, participants, students, peers, and communities. I am so proud of you for the hard work you willingly undertake in service to the greater good, while at the same time striving to care for yourselves and your loved ones. I am honored and humbled to have had the fortune to spend 20 years with you and the students who came before you.
I'll miss you very much, and I hope you'll let me know how you are and what you're doing. I wish you all the best during this weird and stressful time. May you, your families and friends, and your communities be as safe and secure as possible, may we all support each other and advocate for justice, equity and tikkun olam (repair of the world), and may we all find time to rest and appreciate what is admirable and magnificent in the world.
Be well,
Shoshana
