Subject: Calling Everyone to Action! Please share the initiative

Please feel free to share this email with your program and colleagues to help spread awareness for the amazing cause.
The anticipation has finally ended. SCP Prevention Day 2020 will kick off tomorrow, Monday February 17th! Although SCP Prevention Day spans only a week, our goal is to remind you of how empowering, liberating, and rewarding prevention can be for you, your community, and our nations. Please take all that is learned and shared over the next 5 days to everyone that you encounter because prevention is a group effort and experience.
The three-tiered event including psychoeducation, dialogue, and lived experience will take place on the Division 17 Discuss listserv. If you are not a recipient of this listserv, please feel free to contact valenewhittaker at gmail.com<mailto:valenewhittaker at gmail.com> to stay up to date on all things prevention this week.
Remember, that we encourage you to take all that is learned to action this week. As you start to plan out your week (like many of us do), please consider adding one of these prevention activities to your list.

  * Enroll in the national organization “Green Dot” training in order to create safer environments everywhere that you go https://cultureofrespect.org/program/green-dot-etc/<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://cultureofrespect.org/program/green-dot-etc/__;!!C5qS4YX3!WVQubKcfsVcOavGHLzu6VkUWAsqUbWwfPauwKpB8484SRT2s-GTjhdTBw1XZ0xY$>
  *   Take a LGBTQ+ empowerment training
  * Make LGBTQ+ and other minority group (e.g., ethnicity, age, religion) materials visible (e.g., magazines, signs, stickers) in your workspace to encourage a feeling of safety and openness
  * Open a conversation with your peers about how our political climate is impacting your work as counseling psychologists and an individual
  * Volunteer at a local organization supporting people living with disabilities
  * “Taking the Other to Lunch<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.ted.com/talks/elizabeth_lesser_take_the_other_to_lunch?language=en__;!!C5qS4YX3!WVQubKcfsVcOavGHLzu6VkUWAsqUbWwfPauwKpB8484SRT2s-GTjhdTBcnm2xhs$>” (TEDTalk provided by Elizabeth Lesser) - spend time with a person who has a different background, experiences, and/or political views, engage in an open, non-judgmental conversation, and seek areas of agreement
  * Volunteer at your local community health clinic
  * Get screened for STIs and STDs in order to engage in sexual health prevention
  * Make an appointment to ensure that you are up to date on your vaccines in order to engage in health prevention
  * Talk to your local health clinic about barriers they experience as a community provide as well as what forms of support they need
  * Register to vote to ensure that counseling psychologists’ values and strives are continuously being met by our local and national government, especially when considering the political barriers to our prevention efforts
  * Engage in self-care (e.g., yoga, exercise, “unplugging” from technology, cooking your favorite meal with the ones you care about)
We want to hear about your experiences so please remember utilize social media and our hashtags #SCPPreventionDay #LiveFree, the Div 17 Discuss listserv, and our email SCPPreventionDay at gmail.com<mailto:SCPPreventionDay at gmail.com> to share your experiences (e.g., photos, reflections, learned information).

President’s Day and the initiation of SCP Prevention Day 2020 is quickly approaching. The prevention section in collaboration with President Anneliese Singh are excited to see all of the great minds we call Division 17 band together as we learn, discuss, and engage in prevention this upcoming week.
As previously mentioned, Prevention Day is a three-tier event including psychoeducation, live dialogue, as well as action.
Psychoeducation – Prevention section chair Dr. Marty Swanbrow Becker will start off the week by explaining the importance of prevention, specifically in his research area of college students’ suicide prevention. Throughout the week, various speakers will also discuss how they engage in prevention and how you can contribute to the cause. You can find these videos on our social media and on the Division 17 Discuss listserv.
Dialogue – We want to hear about your personal experiences, research, and work as well! SCP constantly encourages collaboration and liberation across our fields. In order to better understand the innings of prevention, we invite you to join us on the Division 17 Discuss listserv for prompts, resources, and food for thought. If you are not a recipient of the Discuss listserv, please contact valenewhittaker at gmail.com<mailto:valenewhittaker at gmail.com>.
Engagement – In order for prevention to create change in our world, we must bring it to life. SCP Prevention Week aims to provide a space for you to explore what prevention can look like in your life as well as encourage you to take that next step: act. Throughout the week, we will be posting engagement suggestions for you to choose from. Some examples include enrolling in the national organization “Green Dot” training, taking a LGBTQ+ empowerment training, and volunteering at your local community health clinic. Please gather your peers, colleagues, and friends to join in with you as well. Utilize social media and our hashtags #SCPPreventionDay #LiveFree, the Div 17 Discuss listserv, and our email SCPPreventionDay at gmail.com<mailto:SCPPreventionDay at gmail.com> to share your experiences (e.g., photos, reflections, learned information).
We look forward to Monday, February 17th to begin the inaugural SCP Prevention Day.

Thank you for your support,

Prevention Section, President Anneliese Singh, and Diana Carbonell
