cpsylist: SALA request for insight regarding student concerns

Dear CPSY students,

I am writing on behalf of the CPSY faculty to provide you with a more complete response to the SALA letter that we received on April 8, 2020, which was forwarded to you by Dr. Stormshak on April 9, 2020, along with guidance relating to externships.  Dr. Stormshak’s email should be viewed as a supplement to our letter attached here.

We have addressed our letter to the SALA Board, as the letter we received was from the Board.  However, we are sending the letter to all students, as SALA represents all students and much of the information contained herein is meant to guide all students.  In particular, within each section of our response, we have provided a set of “Recommended Student Advocacy Actions” that we hope empower and advise you in your personal decision-making process.

Speaking only for myself now, my sincere hope is that this letter spurs more 1:1 or group conversations between students and their advisors, as maintaining strong, collaborative relationships has never been more important.  We are all in this together—we are all anxious together, facing many of the same concerns and uncertainties, and we will all be resilient together, helping one another with whatever time and talents we have to overcome present and future challenges.  And, though it is impossible to ignore there are differences in power and security that come with our different positions, we are one community—a community that I deeply value. Though I am only an advisor to some of you, I care about each of you, and I’m here to help each of you weather this crisis (and I feel I can safely say all faculty would share this sentiment).  You are not alone in this.  We stand together.
