Subject: Fall 2019 Doctoral Travel Awards
Hello,
As you may be aware the COE offers Doctoral Student Travel Awards of $500. We award these twice each year, for doctoral students attending conferences taking place Jan 1-Jun 30 and July 1 - Dec 31. As we require a conference acceptance as part of the award application packet giving them out in two different rounds insures all students get the chance to apply no matter when they are attending a conference.
In previous years, the Associate Dean for Academics led a small committee to select recipients for the COE Travel Award program. However, not having a full understanding of each discipline and what conferences might be more important for applicants to attend, we shifted the decision making to the Faculty Advisory Committee. They had some of the same challenges and also found it difficult to sort through the wide array to types of doctoral students and conferences. They suggested that the departments review applications and recommend the students.
So again for this round, the SAS office will still do the logistical management tasks (e.g., conduct the advertising, receiving the applications and organizing them -- see timeline below). Then SAS will provide each department head with the application information for students in their own departments. The departments themselves will decide how they want to select recipients. For example, they could use a currently existing committee or create a new committee. In any case, the decision would be made internally. The department will then report back to the SAS office the name of their recipient(s) so that the travel award can be processed and given to the student.
With our available funding this Fall, we'll be able to award four student stipends of $500 each - one in each department; hopefully we'll be able to do another four awards next Spring.
