We hope you are hanging in there and that your term is going well. Kelsey and I are helping to coordinate/host AEC/AASU's Disability Culture Event this year as part of our GE positions at the AEC. Please see the email below for awesome events next week (Week 7) and please come out to support to any of the events that you can make it to! The local speaker, keisha janney, is a CFT graduate.

And please help us get the word out by forwarding this event to any of your students in your classes/supervision groups or adding the poster (attached) to your class slides for this week.

We are grateful this year to present three main events: a local speaker on sexuality & disability, a disability history exhibit, and a deaf theater performance troupe!

Below are descriptions of each event:

keisha janney - Embodying Sexuality as a Disabled Person

In the mainstream media, we rarely see positive images of disabled people. It is even more rare to see disabled people engaging in sexual activity. More often we are portrayed as sexless and undesirable. Yet, like many adults, disabled people desire a full range of sexual pleasure! Learn more about disability and sexuality through history and ways to achieve pleasure for any body.

Bio: keisha janney (she/her) holds a master’s degree in Couple and Family Therapy from the University of Oregon. keisha’s approach to therapeutic support is client-centered, sex-positive, and informed by intersectional feminism and body liberation. Formerly a diversity officer in higher education, keisha is a strong advocate for minoritized people and is passionate about helping people thrive in a world that is not built for most of us.

Disability History Exhibit – A 22-panel collage that traces over 3,500 years of seldom-told history. From antiquity to the present, the exhibit brings viewers through an illustrated timeline that shows society’s attitudes and how they affect the lives of people with disabilities. Viewers experience powerful feelings as they notice similarities between ancient practices and modern stereotypes. The exhibit is accessible at many levels, striking a balance between easily grasped information and a comprehensive history viewed from multiple angles.

Sunshine 2.0 Workshop and Performance - Sunshine 2.0 is a professional traveling theater troupe based at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, New York. The troupe provides performances and activities for deaf and hard-of-hearing children and adults that highlight the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM), as well as educational topics pertaining to the Deaf experience. Workshop - By incorporating the use of sign-mime, signing songs, body awareness and the use of theater games, participants gain an understanding of body, movement and basic theater techniques useful for everyday life. Performances involve the amazing use of movement, juggling, magic and other entertaining physical elements. The shows not only entertain, they help educate audiences about the Deaf experience -information that is shared through a range of skits and short plays involving sign-mime, dance, gestures, ASL poetry, songs and storytelling. All performances are presented in sign language and spoken English to provide full audience access.
