Lecture at UO will examine the mental health crisis in prisons

One of the most horrific effects of mass incarceration is the epidemic of mental illness in our jails and prisons. Those with mental illness are some of the neediest people in our society. When they end up in the criminal justice system, they fare worse than others. Journalist Alisa Roth, author of Insane: America’s Criminal Treatment of Mental Illness, digs into the mental health crisis in the U.S. criminal justice system. Roth hopes her work will expose abuses and help bring compassion and common sense to how we approach mental illness in our society.
