LATE-BREAKING UPDATES FROM APPIC-MEMBER PROGRAMS - September 12, 2018

This message is the first in a series of e-mails that will provide "late-breaking" news items from APPIC-member internship programs. These announcements will be distributed via MATCH-NEWS at regular intervals during the internship application process in order to provide applicants with important updates about programs to which they may be applying. Training Directors of APPIC-member programs who wish to submit news items for future announcements should refer to the information at the end of this message.

----------

APPIC Member #: 1785
Site Name: Baruch College Counseling Center
Location: New York, NY
Training Director: Dr. Teresa Hurst – teresa.hurst at baruch.cuny.edu<mailto:teresa.hurst at baruch.cuny.edu>

We are pleased to announce that as of July, 2018, the Baruch College Counseling Center Psychology Internship Program was awarded full accreditation by the American Psychological Association’s Commission on Accreditation. For the 2019-2020 training year, we will be offering two internship slots. For a full description of the internship program, please visit our website at https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/studentaffairs/counselingCenter_internship.htm.

APPIC Member #: 2149
Site Name: The Alaska Psychology Internship Consortium (AK-PIC)
Location: Nome, Alaska
Training Director: Seth Green, PhD (sgreen at nshcorp.org<mailto:sgreen at nshcorp.org>) 907-443-3344

We sadly share the news one of our sites, Hope Counseling Center (HCC) in Fairbanks, AK, has withdrawn from the consortium due to a change in their organizational structure no longer allowing an option for serving as a training site.

----------

APPIC Member #: 1176
Site Name: University of Denver GSPP Internship Consortium
Location: Denver, Colorado
Training Director: Jenny Erickson Cornish, PhD jennifer.cornish at duedu

We have added the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan (CMHIFL – previously an independent internship) site to our APA accredited Consortium so now have 8 sites in the Denver metropolitan area. Although we are partially affiliated with the University of Denver (meaning that qualified students from that program are given preference), we do enthusiastically accept applications from other programs, and have ranked and matched with them in previous years.

APPIC Member #: 1172
Site Name: Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan (CMHIFL)
Location: Denver, CO
Training Director: Alan Kent, Ph.D. alan.kent at state.co.us<mailto:alan.kent at state.co.us>

The internship program at CMHIFL has been independently accredited by the APA since the 1960's. Beginning with the class of 2019-2020, we are joining the University of Denver GSPP Internship Consortium (APA accredited, APPIC site 1176): https://www.du.edu/gspp/programs/consortium/index.html. Thus, CMHIFL is no longer accepting applications as a single site. Rather, applications should be submitted to the Consortium. The training and experiences at CMHIFL will remain the same except that interns will now participate in the Consortium Friday Seminars. Please note that the Consortium is “partially affiliated” which means that DU students are given preference in the match. However, applications from other doctoral programs are welcomed and encouraged, and the Consortium regularly matches with such students.

APPIC Member #: 2263
Site Name: Biola Counseling Center at Biola University
Location: La Mirada, CA
Training Director: Michele M. Willingham, Psy.D. - (562) 903-4800 - michele.willingham at biola.edu<mailto:michele.willingham at biola.edu>

The Biola Counseling Center is very pleased to announce that our Internship Program, previously accredited on contingency, was awarded Full Accreditation by the American Psychological Association's Commission on Accreditation at their July review meeting. Our next site visit is scheduled for 2021. For more information about our training program, please see our website.

APPIC Member #: 2456
Site Name: Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility Health Service Psychology Internship Program
Location: San Diego, CA
Training Director: Dr. Kristin Francis kristin.francis at cdcr.ca.gov<mailto:kristin.francis at cdcr.ca.gov>

The RJDCF HSP Internship Program has added new specialty rotations this year. Each intern will complete a core assignment in the mental health program providing individual therapy, group therapy, suicide risk assessment, crisis intervention, and developing and implementing treatment plans. In addition, each intern will complete two specialty rotations, one per academic semester, in one of the following specialty units at RJDCF: Behavioral Health Unit, LGBTQI Unit, Clinical Support Unit, Forensic Assessment Unit, Developmental Disabilities Unit. Additional options for specialty rotations that may be offered include: Clinical Supervision, Substance Use Treatment, Pre-Release Program, Alternative Therapies (yoga, pet therapy, art, gardening), and Curriculum Development. Please email the Training Director, Dr. Kristin Francis at kristin.francis at cdcr.ca.gov<mailto:kristin.francis at cdcr.ca.gov> for the RJDCF HSP Internship Program Intern Brochure with full descriptions of each specialty rotation.

----------

APPIC Member #: 2331
Site Name: Ann Martin Center
Location: Emeryville, CA
Training Director: Katherine Eng, PhD; keng at annmartin.org<mailto:keng at annmartin.org>

Ann Martin Center is pleased to announce that our internship program has been awarded full accreditation until the next site visit in 2021.

INFORMATION FOR TRAINING DIRECTORS WHO WISH TO SUBMIT NEWS ITEMS:

Please note that these announcements are restricted to MAJOR, LATE-BREAKING CHANGES ONLY to your internship program (e.g., receiving APA/CPA accreditation or APPIC membership for the first time, adding or removing a major rotation, discovering a major error or omission in your Directory listing or program materials, implementing a major change in the stipend, closing of a program, changing an application due date). In most cases, this will be information that you feel will significantly affect applicants' decisions to apply to your internship program or that is related to the application process at your site (rather than changes that you could easily communicate to applicants in other ways, such as during interviews). Changes to your program that occur after your application deadline has passed should generally be communicated directly to your applicant pool (e.g., via e-mail, during interviews) rather than via the late-breaking news service.

Since most internship programs experience some changes each year, we are restricting this service to major changes that will most impact students' decisions to apply to programs. Changes that would typically NOT qualify for this service include a change in Training Director or other personnel (unless such a change significantly impacts your program), a minor change in stipend (e.g., less than 10%), re-accreditation by APA/CPA, or renewal of an existing APPIC membership.

GUIDELINES FOR MATCH-NEWS ITEMS:

1. This service is available to APPIC-member internship programs only during Phase I of the Match.

2. These announcements are restricted to MAJOR, LATE-BREAKING CHANGES ONLY to your internship program. In most cases, this will be information that you feel will significantly affect applicants' decisions to apply to your program or that is related to the application process at your site. For example, items that might be reported include:

• Receiving accreditation or APPIC membership for the first time. Announcements that describe progress in achieving accreditation or APPIC membership must conform to APPIC's policies on such announcements (see https://www.appic.org/About-APPIC/APPIC-Policies/Public-Statements).
• Adding or removing a major rotation
• Discovering a major error or omission in your Directory listing or program materials
• Implementing a major change in the stipend
• Closing of a program

3. Changes that you could easily communicate to applicants in other ways, such as during interviews, would typically NOT qualify for this service, such as:

• A change in Training Director or other personnel (unless such a change significantly impacts your program)
• A minor change in stipend (e.g., less than 10%)
• Re-accreditation
• Renewal of an existing APPIC membership.

4. Do NOT move your published application deadline to an earlier date at this point unless absolutely necessary, as some applicants may not see the message and will continue to rely on your previously-published deadline. Moving an application deadline to an earlier date almost inevitably results in problems for both the Training Director and those applicants who didn’t know about the change. It is fine to announce that you are moving an application deadline to a later date.

If you wish to make use of this service, please first review the above guidelines. If your announcement meets these guidelines, e-mail the following information to Dr. Greg Keilin at gkeilin at mail.utexas.edu<mailto:gkeilin at mail.utexas.edu>:

1. Your 4-digit APPIC Member Number
2. Name of your site.
3. Location of site (i.e., city and state).
4. Name and contact information (e-mail and/or phone number) for the Training Director.
5. A brief (hopefully one paragraph) description of the major change to your program.

PLEASE NOTE: Changes to any information required for the Match must be submitted to NMS in the online NMS Match System which is accessible from the Match web site at natmatch.com/psychint<http://natmatch.com/psychint>. Required information for the Match includes site name, Training Director name, e-mail address, mailing address, telephone number, fax number, Match participation status, number and descriptions of programs/tracks, number of positions offered in each program/track, and accreditation status. If you have questions about updating your information, consult the NMS Match System user guide at natmatch.com/psychint/programs/guide.html<http://natmatch.com/psychint/programs/guide.html> or contact National Matching Services at psychint at natmatch.com<mailto:psychint at natmatch.com> or (800) 461-6322.
