As I am sure many of you have seen, we have kicked off our fundraising efforts to fund travel scholarships for student members to attend this year’s Conferencia in San Diego, CA.  Along with that, we are happy to announce that we are now also accepting scholarship applications to help offset student members’ travel expenses!  Attached you will find the application form for the student travel scholarship (it will also soon be posted to our website).  Please forward this information to any students you think would be interested in applying, or to other colleagues who could forward this to their students.

To help potential applicants make arrangements and decisions about attending the conference, I want to provide them with some information to keep in mind.  Scholarships will be in the amount of $300, the cost of the regular registration for student members.  However, scholarships will not be distributed until the conference, therefore, they can think of it as a sort of “reimbursement” for the registration cost.  As such, if students are committed to attending the conference regardless of whether or not they receive a scholarship, I would strongly encourage them to register, a requirement of eligibility, as soon as possible (possibly even during early registration).  While the goal is to have decisions announced by early September 2018, prior to the end date of regular registration, this cannot be guaranteed.  Please encourage students keep this information in mind as they make their travel arrangements and decisions about attending the conference.

To receive the scholarship, recipients are  required to: 1) be current members of NLPA no later than September 10, 2018; 2) register for and attend the conference; 3) give back to the organization by donating two hours of their time during the conference; and 4) attend the Leadership Academy.  The special Leadership Academy will be conducted by two prominent figures in Latina/o Psychology and will take place during the conference.  While this presentation is open to all student attendees, it will be required for scholarship recipients, as this is where the checks will be distributed.  The only exception that will be made to this is recipients are listed on the conference program as having a presentation at the same time.

Also, it is imperative that students make note of the deadline for the application and be sure to follow the directions listed on the application.  Out of fairness to their fellow student applicants, late/incomplete applications and those not received in the appropriate e-mail account will not be reviewed.
