Hi All-
Regarding GE positions please get your applications completed asap. Then, please let me know what you are applying for. Send me a simple list and order you preference.
1. The Instructional positions in CPHS include teaching courses, TA work, co-teaching, and other assignments based on the position and your experience level. These are for FHS courses, FHS Early Childhood courses, and CPSY courses. We have 15 of these
2. The Supervision positions in FHS include about 1/2 returning GEs and 1/2 new GEs. We have 10 of these
3. The "Strategic Alliance" GE positions are ones that CPSY has with various units across campus. What are the strategic alliances? Ways to support GEs throughout campus by maintaining a relationship and collaborations between an academic unit (CPSY) and a student life unit who can use GEs to fill various roles. These GEs require that we maintain ongoing collaboration with the Unit (like the career center) to assure that they continue to provide GEs for CPSY students. This is a great set up for you as students. The limits to this are faculty time expenditures for faculty and the program director, and for the Units it requires that they take only CPSY students.
So, when we have few applicants to Strategic Alliance positions, two things happen. First, our partners are not happy because they have few degrees of freedom to select the best applicants. Second, our partners question the utility of continuing a strategic alliance with us. Given the cost of GEs, we want to keep our partners happy.
Our alliances are:
3 positions at UCTC
2 positions at the Career Center (we haven't heard if these are approved yet)
2 positions in Athletics Advising and student support
2 positions in Accessible Education (only one of these 2 may be a strategic alliance with CPSY but 2 CPSY students now hold theses positions. One will be open next year.)
Our standing culture is to ask you to have a GE for no more than 2 years in any position. This is because we want you to have diverse professional experiences, and we want to have access to more GE positions for incoming students who do not have the connections you do to get funding in other ways. There are exceptions to this:
1) for instance, sometimes our Strategic Alliance units are stressed about new costs and time to train new GEs and/or the required GE skill set is highly specific, they may prefer to keep a GE past 2 years. When this kind of thing happens, we tend to support the unit's preference.
2) Teaching GEs - if you are successfully teaching courses and you want to keep teaching the same courses - we encourage that- because we want our UG courses to be successful and we want you to maximize your time and amortize your preparation that you put into teaching your first year!
Those headed for internship, no need to respond.
Thanks all!!
Benedict
