Subject: dissertation request: Be interviewed about being a therapist in training?

Dear Dr. Hawley McWhirter,

My name is Max Wu, and I am currently a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology conducting my dissertation study on therapist responsiveness (adjusting interventions to clients’ characteristics and needs) and the experiences of novice therapists during their training. My study is being supervised by Dr. Heidi Levitt, a professor in the Clinical Psychology doctoral program at University of Massachusetts Boston.

The participation of students in your specific program at the University of Oregon would be very helpful, because I would like to talk to students from Counseling Psychology programs. This study has been approved by the University of Massachusetts Boston Institutional Review Board( #2017049).

Please consider forwarding the study invitation below to students who are currently enrolled in your program. If you decide to forward this email, you are thereby indicating your willingness to facilitate recruitment of participants for my study. If you are not, however, willing to facilitate recruitment, then you would simply not forward this invitation. Thank you for considering my request.

If you have any questions about the research or are interested in seeing the results of the study, you may contact me (Max.Wu001 at umb.edu<mailto:Max.Wu001 at umb.edu>), or my faculty advisor, Dr. Heidi Levitt (Heidi.Levitt at umb.edu<mailto:Heidi.Levitt at umb.edu>).

I appreciate your consideration and would be glad to answer any questions you might have about the project!

Sincerely,

Max B. Wu, M.A.

=========================================

How do therapists learn to be optimally responsive? What has helped you learn to become a better therapist? What are you still working to become better at?

My name is Max Wu, and I am a doctoral candidate in the University of Massachusetts Boston’s Clinical Psychology doctoral program. I am contacting you because I’m conducting a dissertation research project that is focused upon how therapists develop the capacity to be responsive in their sessions. What I mean by this is: how you respond to your clients’ characteristics and needs, and how you learn to responsively adjust your interventions and relational style in your clinical work.

I would love to talk with you in an approximately 1-hour interview (phone or in-person) at a time at your convenience. If you are a graduate student in a Clinical or Counseling Psychology program in the United States and have had at least a year of supervised clinical practice (with 100+ face-to-face client hours), please contact me at Max.Wu001 at umb.edu<mailto:Max.Wu001 at umb.edu>. I am conducting this study in collaboration with Dr. Heidi Levitt and we have IRB approval from the University of Massachusetts Boston's IRB (#2017049). I would be so glad to hear from you!

Warmly,

Max B. Wu, M.A.
