Dear Student Colleagues,
You may apply for a UO dissertation research fellowship if you meet the following conditions:
· You will have advanced to candidacy by the end of Spring term 2017
· You will have your dissertation committee formally approved at the Graduate School by end of Spring term
· You have a clear idea of your dissertation research project
· You are not defending your final dissertation project this spring
· You are not going on internship next year
Does this describe you? Then read on. You must be nominated by your department first, so submit your materials to Benedict and copy to Becca and your advisor by Feb 1st at 5 pm.
These are the required materials to submit to Benedict:
1. A research prospectus of the dissertation of no more than 1500 words (submitted on no more than five pages), excluding works cited pages (works cited may not exceed three pages). The prospectus should be written in language accessible to faculty who are not necessarily specialists in the subject area. (Note: Your advisor should review this before you submit it to Benedict!)
2. A CV/résumé identifying academic awards, honors, and scholarly activity.
3. Contact information for the department/school/college nominator. (Your advisor, and the nomination letter must be co-signed by Benedict)
4. Contact information for the three faculty recommenders. (The 3 faculty best able to write letters supporting the quality of your dissertation project)
Our department can submit 1-2 names to the College, and the College submits up to 4 names to the Grad School. If the department and College nominate you, you will be notified and can then submit your materials to the Grad School as described below. This is a prestigious award and you would not need a GTF next year!!
Dissertation Research Fellowships
The Graduate School is pleased to announce the 2017-18 Dissertation Research Fellowships, which are comprised of the UO Doctoral Research Fellowship, the Eric Englund Fellowship, and the school/college/department level Dissertation Research Fellowship. These fellowships are designed to support outstanding doctoral students and promote excellence in research at the University of Oregon. The Dissertation Research Fellowships provide financial support for exceptional doctoral candidates to complete their dissertations. Award amounts vary depending on the fellowship awarded but include stipends starting at $16,000 for 3 terms or $10,600 for two terms, a university tuition waiver during award terms, mandatory fees (less $61 per term), and health insurance (95% of the premium).
APPLICATION PROCESS:
PRIOR to applying for the UO Dissertation Research Fellowship, all applicants MUST first submit their application materials to their department, school, or college. The department/school/college will set their own internal deadline (It is February 1st, 2017) prior to the Graduate School deadline to ensure timely review of the application materials and ample time to notify the nominee to proceed with applying through the Graduate School online award application. Please check directly with your department/school/college for their specific deadline.
Once the department or school has had a chance to review materials, they will nominate two to four applicants depending on the school or college guidelines<https://gradschool.uoregon.edu/node/2334#Department%20Nomination%20Guidelines>. The nominating units will then notify the selected individuals who may, at that time, complete the online application below.
Please note that students must be advanced to candidacy by the end of spring 2017 in order to receive an award.
SELECTION PROCESS:
By applying for the UO Dissertation Research Fellowship, candidates are first considered for the UO Doctoral Research Fellowship. Those not selected for the UO Doctoral Research Fellowship will become eligible for the Eric Englund Fellowship and/or the appropriate school/college/department level Dissertation Research Fellowship. The same application/nomination makes nominees eligible for each of the three awards.
Department Nominations:
Each department in the College of Arts and Sciences may nominate TWO candidates. The Schools of Music and Dance, Journalism and Communication, Architecture and Allied Arts, Lundquist College of Business, and the College of Education may nominate up to FOUR candidates each.
After doctoral students have been notified of their nomination by the department/college/school, they should apply for the UO Dissertation Research Fellowship here:

Deadline to apply: Friday, February 17, 2017
Award Information
Eligibility, Nomination Process and Deadline
To be eligible, doctoral students must be advanced to candidacy by the end of the spring 2017 term, have their dissertation committee on-file in the Graduate School, and will be expected to complete their doctoral degree in winter, spring, or summer 2018.
NOMINEE'S ROLE: If your department, school, or college nominates you, you will then apply for the award and submit the following materials via the online application<http://gradschool.uoregon.edu/fellowships> no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17, 2017:
5. A research prospectus of the dissertation of no more than 1500 words (submitted on no more than five pages), excluding works cited pages (works cited may not exceed three pages). The prospectus should be written in language accessible to faculty who are not necessarily specialists in the subject area.
6. A CV/résumé identifying academic awards, honors, and scholarly activity.
7. Contact information for the department/school/college nominator.
8. Contact information for the three faculty recommenders.
THE ROLE OF THE NOMINATING DEPARTMENT, SCHOOL or COLLEGE:
NOMINATION LETTER:
Each department will identify a contact for the nomination letter that will be entered by the nominee/applicant in the online award application. The identified nominator from the department, school, or college will receive an email with instructions for submitting the letter of nomination signed by the department head, which must also be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17, 2017.
LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Each applicant will have identified three faculty recommenders to write a letter outlining the candidate's research, academic background, and potential as a developing scholar. These letters should not exceed two pages. The letters are first submitted to the department/school/college by their internal deadline. Once the nominee/applicant enters the recommenders' information in the online award application, they will receive an email with instructions for submitting their letter of recommendation.
PLEASE NOTE: When the student fills out their online awards application (after being notified of their nomination by the department/school/college), the applicant will enter the information for the nominator and the recommenders. This generates an email to each letter writer, where they are requested to upload their letter or contact the department's graduate coordinator/secretary for assistance in uploading. Once the applicant has submitted their online awards application, the graduate coordinator/secretary is able to upload each document to the awards application, if the recommenders have not already submitted their letter via the email link. The nominating department is responsible for ensuring their letter of nomination is signed by the department head.
Selection and Timeline
Applications will be evaluated by a subcommittee of the Graduate Council. Fellowship awards will be made by late March. In the case that a student who has not advanced to candidacy is tentatively selected to receive the award, they will officially receive the award only if they advance to candidacy by the end of spring 2017. All fellowships (except the UO Dissertation Research Fellowship and the Eric Englund Fellowship) will be paid each term they are received, on the same schedule as Graduate Employment positions.
Other Conditions
Dissertation Research Fellowships may not be held concurrently with other forms of public or institutional support.
Each department in the College of Arts and Sciences may nominate TWO candidates. The Schools of Music and Dance, Journalism and Communication, and Architecture and Allied Arts, Lundquist College of Business Dissertation Research Fellowship, and the College of Education may nominate up to FOUR candidates each.
