Back in the early 90’s the KKK had planned a march by Texas A&M and several people in student affairs created a counter event called “Whoopstock” with a play on words from a cheer that our university does and Woodstock. We had multiple student organizations participate with performances, food, and a festival vibe. Student were strongly encouraged to ignore the KKK and come to the festival. At the time it went over wonderfully and was declared a huge success. We had whoopstock for 15 years annually until it fizzled out.
We have also had the Westboro Church on campus several times and have been impressed with the student response. The last time they came to campus the students held a “yell practice” where they basically do loud cheers. They had over 500 students doing the yells and the Westboro group left in less than 15 minutes.
Earlier this year we had Richard Spencer. We had many community and student organizations and churches, in a line next to the building where he was speaking. They had signs and sang. We also had a university sponsored event in our football stadium that many students attended. However, about an hour before he was to speak a group of about 10 – 15 people showed up with masks and declared they were “antifa” and tried to break through the line of police in our student union. One person was arrested, who was not a student. Our security said that we were very close to having an “ugly” situation. Of course Berkley had situation earlier in the year that did get ugly.
It was announced yesterday that Richard Spencer will be coming to Texas A&M September 11th and the next day at University of Florida. Here at A&M there are already alternative events planned and its front page of our paper today. I know we will have many meetings and try to prepare the best we can . . . but it is a difficult situation with tempers and anger everywhere.
Any ideas will certainly be welcomed!!!! Mary Ann

All-
I keep trying to figure out a way to be proactive around these things. There are going to be more of these, as universities struggle with their histories and artifacts.
What if another event was set up at exactly the same time here, widely publicized, and drew the bulk of audience and attention away from the hate group? We did this once at a university I was in, and the other event sort of fizzled. Of course, this time is different because the expressions of hate are more permissible in the current national climate of hate and discrimination. But could anything like this work? Can we help with resources to campuses to set up counter events? Anneliese sent some good information to all of us. Can we expand it in some way to help? Many of our div 17 colleagues are at the universities that are going to be facing these kinds of events, and it would be nice to do something concrete to reach out. Many of you have lots of experience with these things -- any ideas?

Aug. 12, 2017
Dear Campus Community,
The National Policy Institute has reached out to the university to reserve space for a speaking event featuring white nationalist and “alt-right” activist Richard Spencer on September 12.
This organization is unaffiliated with the university, and no student groups or other groups affiliated with the university are sponsoring this speech. This event is not finalized and it is still under discussion.
Per university regulation 2.004, non-university groups, organizations and persons may rent space on campus, provided they cover rental expenses and security costs like all other third-party renters.
UF administration, staff and campus police are developing a security plan for the potential event and are working with colleagues across the country who have had similar events on their campus.
For many in our community, including myself, this speaker’s presence would be deeply disturbing. What we’ve watched happen in Charlottesville, VA. in the last 24 hours, is deplorable. I again denounce all statements and symbols of hate. The University of Florida is a community of learners, educators and scholars. We encourage open and honest dialogue, and we strive to build an inclusive environment where hate is not welcome.
While this speaker’s views do not align with our values as an institution, we must follow the law, upholding the First Amendment not to discriminate based on content and provide access to a public space.
Though we have a responsibility as a public university, we also have a vital duty to our students, faculty and staff to uphold our educational mission.
Instead of allowing hateful speech to tear us down, I urge our campus community to join together, respect one another and promote positive speech, while allowing for differing opinions. These types of groups want media attention. I encourage our campus community to send a message of unity by not engaging with this group and giving them more media attention for their message of intolerance and hate.
It is up to every student, faculty member, staff member, and myself to demonstrate our university values of respect and inclusion in all that we do. We have an opportunity to lead the way.
We will continue to keep you updated as more information develops through email and our information line: 1-866-UF-Facts.

Thank you, Arpana. Your message is powerful and spot on.
I don't think I've ever been more at a loss for words. I am heartsick.
Candice, I'm eager to hear how APA responds.
I urge everyone to take a look at the SPLC resource that Anneliese attached, because white supremacists will still be targeting college campuses. For example, Richard Spencer has requested space to speak @ the University of Florida on September 12. They are emboldened, and even more so now that this administration has not condemned them.

Dear Colleagues:
As I watch the events unfolding in Charlottesville, VA, I am horrified at the malicious violence. Coming with shields, baseball bats, homemade pepper spray, and bottles of urine suggests a clear intent to incite and enact violence, and create chaos by “Unite the Right” protestors. The issue being the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee, a symbol of the city’s confederate past.
Although politics have certainly fueled the divide that we see currently, this is not merely about the political climate, but the legacies that we have inherited – a society fraught with the history of slavery, internment camps, Islamophobia, antisemitism, homophobia, and other isms. The current political climate is giving people intolerant of diversity the license to act on these atrocities. It was disheartening to see the police not intervene last night. We have seen such lack of interventions in other instances and a concerted effort to attack people of different races, ethnicities, nationalities, faiths, and sexual and gender identities. The racism that was so carefully camouflaged and denied is repeating itself and rearing its ugly head. We do not live in a post-racial society. The alt-right movement<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__en.wikipedia.org_wiki_Alt-2Dright&d=DwMFaQ&c=ODFT-G5SujMiGrKuoJJjVg&r=FtLesh6TBh0h57-n_KJAss6mPsPpHnl03dERL7QletU&m=ovEkzWjsKxz4mmzwWzrA9hkNZvMQwUPP1NRP0K5-nz4&s=GMbRlen1uTeK72uNL7QnLftypnsAshe_6qBxDjt3eIE&e=>(i.e., Nazis, white supremacists) was never new. But the noticeable embracing of the alt-right movement focused on White nationalism and White oppression is spewing further hate. This has been further reinforced by the vague comments by the current administration about the need to stem the “hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides.” We need to be clear – these were not the actions of “many sides,” but of one.
My heart goes out to the people in Charlottesville – many of whom are our colleagues, family members, students, and friends. I am pained by the hate and bigotry that is creating intense tension and fear. Join me in sending healing thoughts to the community in Charlottesville. Thanks Anneliese for the useful resource (attached) that you have provided. As a Society focused on social justice, lets continue our commitment to non-violent community safety and anti-racist interventions in the communities in which we work and live.
In solidarity,
arpana
