Subject: [DIV17DISCUSS] September Announcements
Greetings SCP Colleagues!
There is a tremendous amount of activity this month, along with associated deadlines, so please take the time to review the following:
SCP Statement on the Black Lives Matter Movement
On September 12, the SCP Statement on the Black Lives Matter Movement was announced to reaffirm the commitment of ourselves and our organization to actions that demonstrate our social justice values: scholarship, clinical practice, education and training, self-reflection, activism, and advocacy to end racism and other forms of oppression. To read the full statement, which includes resources, strategies, and suggested areas of research and personal work, go to http://www.div17.org/scp-connect/scp-news/division-17-statement-black-lives-matter-movement/.
2017 APA Convention Collaborative Programming
It’s already time to start preparing for the 2017 APA Convention in Washington, DC, August 3 - 6!
Although the deadline for general convention proposals won’t be due until December 1, COLLABORATIVE proposals are due by 5:00 pm, EST, Friday, October 14.
The intent of collaborative programming is to foster cross-divisional collaboration. Submitters will need to identify a minimum of two divisions that are relevant to the proposal content (and that would review the proposal). For more information on the proposal submission process, go to the Call for Convention Proposals website at http://www.apa.org/convention/convention-proposals.pdf
Because the collaborative program hours are reserved by APA for cross-divisional collaborative efforts and do not belong to individual division, these constitute an excellent additional opportunity for Counseling Psychologists to present!
If you would like to put together a collaborative proposal, please let us know your idea and we’ll try to help. Contact SCP’s Program Chair for the 2017 convention, Mary Ann Covey (mcovey at div17.org<mailto:mcovey at div17.org>) and SCP President Marty Heesacker (heesack at ufl.edu<mailto:heesack at ufl.edu>) with your collaborative program idea.
2017 APA Convention – Call for Division Proposals
The 2017 APA Convention Call for Division Proposals deadline is Thursday, December 1, 2016.
The 2017 APA Convention will be held in Washington, DC, (August 3 –
August 6, Thursday through Sunday). The Call for Proposals is available in the September 2016 issue of the APA Monitor and on the APA website, http://www.apa.org/convention/proposals.aspx. Please note that there are two different submission deadlines: Collaborative Programming proposals are due Friday, October 14, 2016 and Division proposals are due Thursday, December 1, 2016. All proposals for both types of submissions must be submitted electronically via the APA website. PLEASE NOTE THAT PROGRAM SUBMISSION DEADLINES ARE NO LONGER MIDNIGHT AND ARE NOW AT 5:00 PM, EST.
SCP 2017 Theme: President Martin Heesacker’s program theme for Division 17, Society of Counseling Psychology (SCP) is "Draw the Circle Bigger" - focusing on widening the circle of participation opportunities within SCP, creating a seat on the Executive Board for Early Career Professionals, and practical solutions to the challenges facing our master’s colleagues and students. We invite symposia (50 minutes), roundtables, and posters that focus on this theme and presidential initiatives within the context of developmental, multicultural, and positive psychology or strengths-based perspectives. See http://www.div17.org<http://www.div17.org/> for more information on the mission, goals, and approaches of Counseling Psychology.
