cpsylist: Assignments for the Writing Workshop

Dear Student Colleagues,
Here are more details about the writing workshops on Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Please review and complete the pre-workshop homework (attached and/or below) and follow directions for submitting the requested materials (due dates are different for each of 3 assignments).

All sessions mandatory for incoming doctoral students. Strongly encouraged for all other students.

Pre-Workshop Assignments
            Attached.
For Thier workshop, incoming first year CPSY and PREV students complete "CPSY new students HW". For all others, complete "CPSY returning students HW". Instructions for submitting assignment are in the attachment.
For Anderson workshop, all students should complete "Figures Assignment" using attached Bronfenbrenner article as a reference. Instructions for submitting the assignment are in the attachment.
For Lenn workshop, email Katy Lenn (klenn at uoregon.edu<mailto:klenn at uoregon.edu>)  the following by 5 pm Monday Sept 12, using "Writing Workshop-YourLastname" as the subject heading and including these prompts along with your responses:

*  Current area of interest:  topic - general idea (narrower than counseling psychology or prevention science) and/or if you have an interest in a specific population

*  Your most recent academic degree was a (level) _____ in (subject)________________

*  Have you published an article in a peer-reviewed journal?

*  Have you presented at a national conference?

Biography, Michael Thier

Michael Thier is jointly appointed as a Research and Policy Fellow at the Educational Policy Improvement Center and the University of Oregon's Center for Equity Promotion. He is a candidate for a concurrent Ph.D. in Educational Methodology, Policy, and Leadership and a Master's of Public Administration. Using quantitatively dominant mixed methods, Thier evaluates policies and programs that engender global citizenship education. He also examines opportunities and challenges inherent in preparing students in rural and remote schools for college and careers. He collaborates with researchers in Australia, Canada, China, the Netherlands, Qatar, Senegal, Spain, and the United States. He has won awards from the American Educational Research Association, English Journal, and the Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund. Previously, Thier directed International Baccalaureate programmes in North Carolina, where he was a National Board-certified teacher, and worked as a journalist in New York. He has a B.A. in journalism from New York University and M.A.T. (English, Grades 7-12) from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is the proud father of two daughters.

Biography, Ross Anderson

Ross Anderson is appointed Senior Lead Researcher at the Educational Policy Improvement Center in Eugene, OR. Ross serves as PI for a four-year federally funded arts education model development, research, and dissemination project working with 10 local middle schools to increase creative teaching and learning opportunities through rigorous integration of the arts across content areas and schoolwide transformation (http://www.artcorelearning.org). Using quantitative and qualitative methods, Ross researches the development and measurement of skills and dispositions, such as creative thinking and engagement in school and evaluates the affect of interventions. With an aim to increase equitable opportunities to learn and apply noncognitive skills for K-12 students, Ross collaborates with researchers and practitioners around the United States to design, implement, and study policy and practice innovations. For the 2016-2017 academic year, Ross has been awarded the Margaret McBride Lehrman Fellowship at the University of Oregon. Prior to beginning doctoral work, Ross served as Director of Strategic Initiatives in the Norwich Public Schools in Norwich, CT. Ross enjoys reading, drawing, and adventuring with his wife, Helana, two children, Kade and Neala, and Collie pup, Tansy.


Biography, Dr. Michael Bullis


 Michael Bullis is the Sommerville-Knight Professor in the College of Education at the University of Oregon and a member of the Department of Educational Methodology, Policy, and Leadership. Dr. Bullis received his Ph.D. at the University of Oregon in 1983 in Special Education and Rehabilitation, specializing in research methods. Since 1986, he has been awarded and managed 38 externally funded federal and state evaluation contracts, research, and model demonstration projects - totaling more than $22 million and leveraging another $4.5 million in state matching funds. His work has focused on community-based job placement and support procedures for adolescents and young adults with high risk behaviors, including those individuals leaving the correctional system or the mental health system. He has more than 150 professional publications and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders and Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin. He is a former co-editor of Career Development for Exceptional Individuals.

>From 2005-13 Dr. Bullis was the Dean of the College of Education, overseeing the College's $50+ million building and renovation project and more than doubling the number of tenure track faculty.  During his time as Dean, the College accounted for roughly one third of the University of Oregon's external funding portfolio and three graduate programs were named among the top five nationally in those respective areas.
