cpsylist: New externship for GROUP THERAPY

Dear CPSY Student Colleagues,

If you have passed your adult practicum, and upon consultation with your advisor, determine that you have time to commit to this NEW externship opportunity at UCTC, read on! This is an externship focused on GROUP THERAPY.
To apply, you need to have taken a group therapy/group counseling class, passed Adult Practicum, have advisor approval, and submit to Dr. Asha Stephen via. email (astephen at uoregon.edu<mailto:astephen at uoregon.edu>) by Mon Oct 31st:

(1)    A cover letter indicating your interest in the group externship

(2)    Your updated CV

After review of applications, interviews will take place in mid-November.
See description below and contact Dr. Asha Stephen with any questions. This is a great opportunity! There is a separate externship registration associated with this class so it will show as group experience on your transcripts.

UCTC Group Therapy Externship Description

1-credit externship that the student would enroll for in two consecutive terms (Winter and Spring). (2 credits total)

The group externship would involve:



(1)    The extern would process-observe a group led by UCTC staff member(s) for the Winter term (1.5 hour group). They will also be involved in the de-briefing of the group , and also being involved in writing the group process notes. The externs would work with the Group Coordinator to discuss which group options would best fit their experience level.



(2)    The extern would receive a half-an-hour per week of supervision with the group facilitator(s)



(3)    Once the extern has completed process-observation of a group, the extern would co-lead a group with one of the UCTC staff members. This will happen over the Spring term and will include them co-facilitating the group that they process observed or potentially another group depending on group time, etc.


(4)    The extern may also have the opportunity over Winter or Spring term to co-lead one of our psychoeducational groups such as the anxiety management group



(5)    The externship would also include some paperwork time.



(6)    The externs will meet the Group Therapy Coordinator for a group seminar every other week. This would be an opportunity for them to process their experience in the group as well include a didactic portion. They would show video of their group, get feedback, learn more about group facilitation, the stages of group, etc.



(7)    The externship will also include helping with the creation of group material/activities/handouts for the UCTC, and potentially some group related outreach



(8)    Total time commitment would be anywhere from 40-60 hours per term, depending on their experience level and the kinds of groups we have to offer.
