Hello Division 17 colleagues,
We hope this e-mail finds you all well. In light of the recent tragic events that have taken place both in our country and around the world, we are looking forward to the APA Convention as a time for us to reconnect and come together for inspiration and support. SAS is looking forward to sponsoring several events with a social justice focus that will hopefully facilitate student learning and dialogue about what we can do as counseling psychologists-in-training to create meaningful change.

Friday, August 5
1:00-2:50pm- How to be a PsychAdvocate: Students Advocating for Change
Karen Studwell, JD, the Associate Executive Director of Government Relations for the APA Education Directorate will lead an informative presentation on effective advocacy at the federal level, specifically for graduate students. Food and refreshments will be served. Located in the SCP Hospitality Space, Brown Palace Hotel, Onyx Room.
6:30-7:30pm- SAS Social Hour
An opportunity for counseling psychology graduate students to connect with one another. Appetizers will be served. Located at Territory Kitchen + Bar, 1400 Welton Street (inside the Hilton Garden Inn).
Saturday, August 6
11:00-11:50am- Student Voices: Examining the Complexities of Privilege and Power
A symposium examining the intersection of privilege and oppression in higher education and ways that psychology graduate students have engaged in dialogue to facilitate deeper communication. Featuring the following presentations: (1) #concernedstudent1950: A Case-Study of Institutional Racism at the University of Missouri, (2) Grad Students Talk: A Student-Led Response Discussing Power and Privilege, and (3) Privileged in the Academy: Positioning Counseling Psychology in Current Student Protests. Presentation 1: Reuben Faloughi, MA (University of Missouri-Columbia) & Sarah F. May, MA (University of Missouri-Columbia). Presentation 2: James J. Garcia, MS (University of North Texas), Shraddha Sundaram, MA (University of Florida), Ashley Oliver, MS (Cleveland State University), Brittan L. Davis, MEd (Cleveland State University), Rebecca L. Fix, MS (Auburn University), Melanie M. Lantz, PhD (Louisiana Tech University), Leighna Harrison, PhD (Palo Alto University) & Candice N. Crowell, PhD (University of Kentucky). Presentation 3: Emily Unzueta, MA (University of California-Santa Barbara) & Jennifer J. Bordon, MA (University at Albany-State University of New York). Dr. Donna Schultheiss (Cleveland State University) and Erica Wiley Whiteman, MA (Cleveland State University) will co-chair and Dr. Julia Phillips (Cleveland State University) will act as discussant. Located in the Convention Center, Room 113.
1:00-1:50pm- Social Media as a Vehicle for Social Justice and Advocacy
A panel led by Dr. Candice Crowell (University of Kentucky), Dr. Aaron Rochlen (University of Texas) and Della Moseley, MS (University of Kentucky) will discuss effective ways for counseling psychology students to utilize social media for social justice purposes, along with ethical considerations. Food and refreshments will be served. Located in the SCP Hospitality Space, Brown Palace Hotel, Highlands Room.
