<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">By now you have seen President Scholz’s message about the UO budget and the road ahead. In that email, he explains that the university is once again facing a budget shortfall and will need to reduce expenditures
by approximately $65 million to avoid a recurring annual deficit. His message outlines the factors contributing to this situation and describes, at a high level, the short- and longer-term actions the university will take to restore financial balance.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt"> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size:11.0pt">At this time, I do not have details about how this deficit will impact our college, or how our college will be asked to respond</span></b><span style="font-size:11.0pt"> (beyond maintaining the hiring/pay
action freeze and refraining from non-essential travel). However, it seems reasonable to conclude that we will once again be asked to engage in budgetary action. Given that the current shortfall is more than twice as much as the structural deficit we dealt
with last year, it also seems reasonable to conclude that the actions needed to “take a different path” will be significant.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt"> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">Over the coming months, the university will be developing and leading a consultative process through which more details will emerge. Although there is currently not enough information for me to take immediate
action or to make any commitments, I can assure you that I will engage in a consultive approach within what will likely to be constrained parameters as we move forward.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">One important and welcome difference from last year is that no final decisions will be made over the summer. As we await further updates, I encourage us to continue our work with the care and integrity that
defines the COE. We have weathered storms before, and while this one appears to be rough, I am hopeful that our impactful work and reputation for excellence will play a buffering role in the times ahead.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
