<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">We are now well into summer, but we still have a lot happening in the College of Education. Many of you are supporting students enrolled in our summer programs, catching up on scholarly writing, working on
grant proposals/projects, volunteering in and connecting with community, and (I hope) taking time for relaxation and self-care.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt"> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">As I mentioned in my note at the beginning of the month, I’m honored to have this opportunity to serve the college in this capacity and to work alongside each of you as colleagues in pursuit of our shared
mission and want to thank you for all the well-wishes and welcomes I have been receiving. While I’m in this interim role, my plan (to the best of my ability) is to maintain a similar rhythm and cadence to what we have developed over the past years. As such,
I plan to retain these weekly messages (monthly in the summer) and to use them to share information, updates, and general shared resources that cross my desk. I have a few such updates to share today.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt"> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">However, before I share those updates, even though this is my first email, I would be remiss not to mention the elephant in the room. While our college has been and continues to operate with financial responsibility,
we were unable to escape budget cuts facing the university. As a result, at the end of Spring, the COE made cuts that impacted faculty and staff across all departments. In this scenario, no cut is a small cut. Each decision is deep and painful.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt"> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">I’ve been asked to continue the legacy of financial responsibility and to think ahead about our college’s trajectory, value, and assets. As the landscape keeps shifting underneath us, I am unable to provide
any new assurances at this time. But as we move forward through these next stages, I commit to ensuring that as decisions proceed, they will be made in the spirit of shared governance, consultation, discretion, and compassion while honoring our core mission,
our values, and our people.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
