<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">Much is weighing on my mind right now as our community continues to face funding cuts to our grant portfolio and we face a challenging set of financial constraints on the academic side. As we plan for leaner
times ahead, I’m reminded of the strength and resilience of our college community and our ability to support one another through challenging times. The college is prioritizing our core research and academic mission and the dean’s office is working with academic
department heads and unit directors to identify our priorities and set of actions that are consistent with our values. This is challenging work and I plan to share more with you when additional information is known later this term.

UC Berkely School of Public Health for this year’s Leaon Tyler Distinguished Lecture, Advancing Community-Engaged Research with Youth and University Support. Dr.Ozer is a clinical/community psychologist in public health who focuses on promoting the healthy
development and empowerment of adolescents, bridging participatory research approaches and prevention science in school-based interventions.</span> <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size:11.0pt">2025-26 NIH Academy: A Message from OVPRI <o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">We are now soliciting applications for the 2025-2026 NIH Academy cohort training program.<b> <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt"> <b> <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">The OVPRI seeks to boost the success of early-career researchers applying to the National Institutes of Health, one of the top funders of research at the UO. Our NIH Academy will provide comprehensive training
leading to the submission of an NIH R01 proposal (or equivalent). Eligible participants include research assistant professors, assistant professors, and recently tenured (within 3 years) associate professors who have not yet received a major independent NIH
award, as well as research associates with a track record of securing independent research grants.
<i>Other faculty (associate professors beyond 3 years from tenure and full professors or research professors) may apply if they are significantly changing research directions or targeting NIH for the first time due to changes in the federal funding landscape.</i><b> <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt"> <b> <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">This training employs a cohort model of 8-12 investigators with the goal of increasing the competitiveness of submissions and decreasing the time between a trainee’s independent research appointment and receipt
of their first major NIH research award.<b> <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt"> <b> <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">The NIH Academy is led by a faculty chair (Jennifer Pfeifer, Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship, CAS) and the Assistant VP of Strategic Research Initiatives (Kate Petcosky-Kulkarni),
with significant support from Research Development Services. The NIH Academy will provide a supportive learning community that trains participants in every stage of the proposal development process including finding the correct institute, contacting a program
officer, crafting compelling specific aims, and producing key ancillary documents such as the biographical sketch and human subjects research documents.<b> <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">The program will include in-person workshops, peer review, external review, dedicated support from RDS, and additional services, including graphic design.<b> <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">Applications are now open for the 2025-26 academic year. All participants are expected to submit an NIH R01 application in June 2026.<b> <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
