<span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;color:#0E101A;font-style:normal">Studying risk and protective factors is crucial to address the global disease burden attributable to alcohol use. This talk presents findings from original
studies that examined risk and protective factors (i.e., etiologic factors) for alcohol use and misuse to inform prevention efforts and interventions among Latino/a populations. The talk will focus on the role of etiologic factors as targeted mediators for
preventive interventions delivered in a new cultural context. Results underscore the universal nature of risk and protective factors and how such etiologic factors are instrumental in examining how preventive interventions work after cultural adaptation. Findings
provide the foundation for future work on how cultural stress, immigration stress, and social influences (e.g., media and interpersonal) might play an essential role in the etiology of alcohol use among recent Latino immigrants in the United States and the
implementation of culturally appropriate preventive interventions aimed to promote health and prevent behavioral problems in this population.

About Dr. Montero-Zamora

Dr. Pablo Montero-Zamora is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at the University of Texas Austin. He also serves as a research consultant to the Organization of American States and to research groups
at the University of Washington and Boston College. He has a Ph.D. in Prevention Science & Community Health from the University of Miami, an MS in Epidemiology-Health Metrics from the National Institute of Public Health of Mexico, and an MS in Dentistry from
the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain. His work focuses on the influence of context, parents, and peers on Latino/a youth substance use and mental health. Specifically, he studies how cultural stressors (e.g., perceived discrimination), migration,
and social norms influence family functioning and dynamics, resulting in youth antisocial and prosocial behaviors. By studying these etiological relations, and their potential variability among subgroups in the U.S. and abroad, his research ultimately centers
on improving the development, implementation, and evaluation of culturally adapted evidence-based interventions targeting Latino/a families. Dr. Montero-Zamora’s CV is attached to this email. Please join us to learn more about Dr. Montero-Zamora’s work!
