Dear College of Education faculty and staff,

I’m thrilled to announce that
Dr. Sylvia Linan-Thompson will join the COE leadership team as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, effective fall 2022. Dr. Thompson is an associate professor of special education and has been at UO since December 2015. Dr. Thompson recently served
as the program director for the special education program and has a strong history of leadership in higher education, both here and at her previous institution (UT Austin). Dr. Thompson will provide leadership and oversight of our academic affairs activities,
including working with Dr. George Harrison (EDUC program director), Dr. Zeni Colorado-Resa (assistant dean for academic accreditation and operations), curriculum committee (currently chaired by Dr. Allison Schmitke), and program directors.

Dr. Thompson has served as a faculty member in educator preparation programs for over 20 years. Her primary research interests are examining appropriate instructional and assessment practices for English learners. She also works on international
development projects in education and has collaborated with the World Bank, UNESCO, and the US Agency for International Development on education projects in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia.

As we welcome Sylvia to the role, I want to also take a moment to formally acknowledge and appreciate the leadership that
Dr. Lillian Durán provided the COE Dean’s office for the past four years. During this time, Dr. Durán worked to develop systems to improve our curriculum review, worked with faculty and
program directors across the COE to revamp our EDUC courses and sequence, and provided input, oversight, and support to our assistant dean for accreditation as we underwent COE-wide accreditation through AAQEP. Under Dr. Duran’s leadership we shifted to remote
instruction during the pandemic and then shifted back. Lillian has gone above and beyond her role by providing advocacy to our faculty, programs, students, and staff. Dr. Durán was a major contributor to the Academic Leadership team in the COE Dean’s office
during the past four years. Dr. Durán has begun a much-deserved and hard-earned sabbatical and is basking in the news of her recent promotion to Full Professor. Congratulations and thank you, Lillian, and welcome Sylvia!
