<b>climate survey</b> of employees from April 11 - 29. This is an important initiative designed to measure and improve our workplace culture. The survey will establish a baseline for understanding our present climate, set a benchmark against which to measure
change over time, help shape current and future institutional priorities, and inform action plans to enhance and improve the climate within our College of Education<b>
</b>and at the university as a whole. The survey is being administered by Gallup. Please take 15-20 min and complete the survey by April 29, 2022. Your input will help make the findings more representative and complete.

firm Ithaka S+R, will be conducting a research practices survey of our faculty members and graduate students in most programs. This survey will not go to staff, undergraduate students, or Law affiliates. The aim of the survey is to understand, in this new
era of hybrid teaching and research, how faculty and graduate students access library resources, conduct research and scholarly inquiry, engage in teaching practices, and perceive UO Libraries services, collections, and facilities. No personally identifiable
data will be collected, and the aggregated results will be shared widely. Each faculty member and graduate student will get a personal invitation to their UO email address. The survey should only take 15 to 20 minutes. The information collected from these

<p class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:1.0in">Lauren C. Mims, PhD is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at Ball State University, and an incoming assistant professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at
NYU. She earned her doctorate in Educational Psychology: Applied Developmental Science and her B.A. in English and Psychology from the University of Virginia in 2019 and 2012, respectively. She earned her M.A. in Child Development with a concentration in Clinical
Developmental Health from Tufts University in 2014. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:1.0in">Dr. Mims was formerly Assistant Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans during the Obama Administration. She was a member of the White House Council on Women and Girls,
the U.S. Department of Education Policy Committee, the U.S. Department of Education Socioeconomic Diversity Working Group, as well as a member of First Lady Michelle Obama's Reach Higher Working Group. Lauren developed and hosted events such as the AfAmWomenLead
Student Summit to Support Black Girls, a summit to support African American students with disabilities, and reading parties for youth to share resources, foster creativity and nurture a love of learning.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:1.0in">Broadly, the ultimate goal of Dr. Mims' research is to “freedom dream” (Kelley, 2002) with Black children and their families, and then use that brilliance to guide the development of new research, policies, practices,

<span style="color:black;background:white">SPECS Department Head, Beth Harn, has informed me of a sad loss in our community. In Beth’s words, “<b>Dr.</b>
<b>Barbara Bateman</b>, professor emeritus and alumna of the Special Education program here at the University of Oregon, passed away last Friday morning (April 15, 2022) at her home in Creswell, OR. As a native Oregonian, she was a trailblazer and leader in
special education in terms of both assessment and legal aspects in protecting and supporting students with disabilities. After teaching students with disabilities for years, she obtained her PhD at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champlain, working with
Dr. Sam Kirk. Their efforts created the term and assessment practices to identifying students with learning disabilities. She returned to Oregon to pursue her law degree here at the University, completing it in 1976. While in law school and after, she was
influential in drafting the initial Public Law 94-142 that provided guidance, policy, and protections to students and families with disabilities (e.g., Individuals with Disabilities and Education Act; IDEA). Her scholarly efforts were so prolific and important
in these early years of special education policy implementation, but many will point to her work in guiding the development of effective Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) goals as being the most influential. Her most widely read book, "Better IEPs: How<span style="letter-spacing:-.15pt"> </span>to
Develop Legally Correct and Educationally Useful Programs" is still used across our nation today as her son David F. Bateman continues the work related to special education law and assessment practices. Dr. Barbara Bateman worked in the Special Education
program from 1966-94 where she taught classes in school psychology and special education related to educational assessment, law in special education, test and measurement and reading methods. She received numerous honors including being named a Fellow in the
International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities as well as the <span style="border:none windowtext 1.0pt;padding:0in">Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) J.E. Wallace Wallin Special Education Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. Her advocacy
for the children and families with disabilities was powerful and will surely be missed. Her passion is still infused in the Special Education program and the COE’s commitment to improving educational systems to enhance the lives of children families. </span>“</span><o:p></o:p></li></ul>
