<p class="MsoNormal">Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting with Senators Ron Wyden, Jeff Merkley, and Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici at a media event in Portland designed to serve as a forum to talk about the behavioral and mental health crisis in children
and youth. Randy Kamphaus set the stage and Counseling Psychology and Human Services Associate Professor Atika Khurana gave a compelling presentation on her research that focused on the development of self-regulation and its role in predicting adolescent risk
behavior trajectories. In a matter of minutes, it became very clear to me that our
<b>US senators and US Representatives know us and know our work in the College of Education</b>. They are strong advocates for education research, higher education, and K-12 education in the state and across the nation. At times like this, it makes me proud
to be your interim dean and represent our collective in the College of Education. Your work in the classroom, schools, and community settings, as well as in the research, development, and innovation space is valued and so desperately needed.

<b>Rhonda Nese</b>, Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education and Clinical Sciences and a Principal Investigator within Educational and Community Supports, has earned the President's Equity Award for the

Northwest PBIS Network</a>. The Northwest PBIS Network is a regional non-profit that supports over 300 districts in WA, OR, and AK as well as work in partnership with the state department of education in OR, WA, AK, and the California Attorney General, on integrating
mental health promotion and response in the school environment. Reducing exclusionary and shame-based discipline is a large part of the prevention work. Rhonda’s work on disciplinary equity has been game changing for educators in our region. Her current work
on alternatives to suspension puts practical strategies into the hands of school personnel. These strategies help reduce exclusion, and redirect educators to high-leverage, dignified practices. <b><o:p></o:p></b></li></ul>

<b>Lija Jones</b>, has been selected by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board as a Fulbright Award recipient for the 2022/23 program year. She was selected for the Teaching Assistantship Program in Spain’s Canary Islands. Lija will assist teachers in early
childhood and elementary schools with English Language classes as well as other subjects. Lija will be graduating in June, 2022, from the University of Oregon’s Robert D. Clark Honors College with a bachelor's degree in Communications Disorders and Sciences
and a minor in Psychology. She has served as a research assistant in Samantha Shune’s Optimizing Swallowing and Eating for the Elderly Lab for two years and as the University of Oregon’s National Student Speech Language Hearing Association President this past
