Dear COE Faculty and Staff,

First, please join me in expressing my gratitude to Dr. Lillian Durán for her 4 years of service as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in our college. Dr. Durán led our college through a series of unprecedented academic scenarios with
imagination, flexibility, and advocacy. I have appreciated Dr. Durán’s advocacy for our college’s unique needs and I express my utmost gratitude to Dr. Durán as she resumes her role among her colleagues and is able to turn her attention to her research and
instruction in the SPECS department.

In addition to the process occurring within departments to nominate new Department Heads for those at the end of their terms or at a transition point, we must also engage in the full process of nominating and appointing the next Associate
Dean for Academic Affairs into this role. Consistent with prior transitions, the incoming Associate Dean will engage in some light shadowing with Dr. Durán this Spring and step into leadership this summer, with full responsibilities beginning September 16th,
2022.

At this time, I ask that core faculty and staff across all academic departments, nominate or self-nominate eligible faculty-members for consideration by sending the name or names to Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann by Friday March 11th,
2022. Please note that, consistent with current practice, the appointment is .40 FTE during the AY and includes an annual stipend of $10,000. This FTE is generally taken as course releases. Please note that faculty are required to teach a minimum of one course
per year per our workload policy. In addition to the academic year FTE, there is also summer FTE (.25) to reflect administrative responsibilities and leadership over the summer. Some relevant specifics of the nomination process, as specified in our current
Internal Governance Policy, are excerpted below.

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (ADAA) is responsible for overseeing and guiding the academic mission and providing oversight of academic processes and policies in the COE, including curriculum, and
faculty/student grievances. In addition, the ADAA provides leadership to and supports the integration of the academic and research enterprises within the academic programs.

The Associate Deans shall be selected by the Dean from COE career faculty members at the rank of Associate Professor or higher. In the case of the Associate Dean for Service and Outreach, and the Associate
Dean for Research and Faculty Development, a nominee at the rank of either Senior Research Associate I or Associate Research Professor or higher may be appointed. The Dean shall solicit and consider nominations from representative faculty. Preference for both
of these positions shall be given to candidates with the rank of full Professor, Senior Research Associate II of Full Research Professor and relevant University level experience. The Dean shall consult with constituent faculty (i.e., department heads, unit
directors, Program Directors) in the final decision-making process. An Associate Dean is appointed at 0.40 for three years, beginning September 16 and ending September 15. The Associate Deans shall receive annual performance reviews, performed by the Dean,
based on their responsibilities. The Dean shall solicit input (e.g., electronic, meeting) from representative faculty and staff within this process. These reviews shall be completed before the beginning of the fall term and address service during the prior
academic year. A faculty member may serve any number of consecutive or non-consecutive terms as Associate Dean at the discretion of the Dean based on assuming satisfactory annual performance reviews. It is permissible in circumstances of specific need for
the Dean to appoint a single individual to both Associate Dean positions simultaneously if that individual possesses adequate qualifications in both areas. Associate Deans shall receive compensation according to the details laid out in the COE policy on compensation
for administrative appointments.

There are now numerous faculty among our ranks who have held leadership roles in the Dean’s Office and who may be willing to answer your questions as you consider self-nominating or nominating someone for this demanding but ultimately
rewarding role. I am also always available for any questions you may have as you consider the expectations of serving as an Associate Dean. I look forward to your nominations and to another successful appointment this role for our college. With gratitude.
