In this presentation, Dr. Schmitt will provide an overview of her research on interventions designed to promote self-regulation and school readiness in children from vulnerable populations. She will first discuss the importance of developing
strong self-regulation during the early childhood period. She will then describe her work on intervention approaches at various levels (e.g., state policy, classroom, small group) that aim to improve this set of skills in preschool and beyond. She will end
by discussing future directions for her program of research.

This presentation is part of an on-campus interview for the tenure-track Bricker/Squires Faculty Chair in Early Intervention (Associate or Full Professor) position in the Department of Special Education and Clinical Sciences.

About Dr. Schmitt

Dr. Sara Schmitt is an associate professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Purdue University where she also serves as Co-Director of the Center for Early Learning. A former preschool teacher, Dr. Schmitt’s scholarship,
teaching, and service focuses on optimizing early learning among historically marginalized children and families. Dr. Schmitt’s work focuses on improving self-regulation, early literacy, and early numeracy to support young children’s school readiness. Her
innovative interventions are conducted in naturalistic environments, including home and preschool settings, and are designed to be scalable and cost-effective. Since joining the faculty at Purdue in 2013, she has authored or co-authored over 55 refereed journal
articles and has secured over $18 million in grants as PI or Co-PI to support this work. She regularly teaches undergraduate and graduate courses focusing on early childhood development and families. She is a skilled mentor and has chaired over 20 dissertation
or thesis committees while on faculty at Purdue. Please join us to learn more about Dr. Schmitt’s work and her many achievements!
