Dear COE Faculty and Staff,

As we shared briefly at the end of the Spring faculty and staff meeting, the College of Education (COE) DEI committee has proposed that the college develop a process to proactively support COE community members in their individual journeys
in the areas of Equity and Inclusion while simultaneously holding our college collectively accountable to a shared spirit of continuous improvement.

To achieve this, the COE is considering facilitating professional development opportunities in the area of Equity and Inclusion as part of our typical ongoing professional practice in the college.

The recommendation is based on the understanding that certain principles related to the promotion of equity and inclusion (intentionality towards: inclusiveness, transparency, empathy, proactive support, open-mindedness, openness to discourse,
respectful discourse, celebration of differences, personal accountability, and cultural humility) should consistently be reflected in the work, activities, communication, interactions, choices, and day-to-day decisions of COE faculty and staff. This recommendation
is also based on the understanding that the college has a responsibility to support this expectation by providing opportunities to learn, opportunities to practice, frequent reinforcement, and frequent modeling.

While these are skills already possessed by the overwhelming majority of our faculty and staff, the goal of the recommendation would be to facilitate intentional opportunities for faculty and staff to strengthen and continuously improve
these skills so that they become the recognizable and undisputable hallmark of the college’s climate.

The college’s DEI committee has drafted a short list of ways that the COE may be able to make DEI-focused professional development opportunities more readily accessible to COE faculty and staff within our current resources. Please review
the options in the attached document and use the Qualtrics survey
COE DEI Professional Development models_vote to indicate which option most closely reflects your general preference for COE’s role in facilitating equity and inclusion professional development opportunities for our
COE community.

We will have an opportunity to provide any helpful clarifications during the Faculty and Staff meeting on October 1st, 2021 and responses to the vote will be due by close of business on Friday October 8th,
2021.
