<ul style="margin-top:0in" type="disc">
<li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">Join the Provost’s Teaching Academy to <b>discuss strategies for teaching through a charged, divisive election season in this faculty forum, Thursday, October 22<sup>nd</sup>,
4:00-5:00pm.</b> Participants’ insights will be captured as part of a teaching resource that will be circulated to all faculty and graduate student instructors. <u><a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/t.e2ma.net/click/4wnjtd/wir20g/g6mqtu__;!!C5qS4YX3!VAuVRpliX0XZ0EO6be9cwb9F_MrBZf16YeYPEY1A8cmUaGxf59C9rdGjCc3MoSQv$">Register
here</a></u> for the forum. TEP offers guidance on supporting student learning within our current social and political context, especially considering remote and online modalities, in its <b><u><a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/t.e2ma.net/click/4wnjtd/wir20g/wynqtu__;!!C5qS4YX3!VAuVRpliX0XZ0EO6be9cwb9F_MrBZf16YeYPEY1A8cmUaGxf59C9rdGjCVISjivF$">Teaching
in Turbulent Times Toolkit</a></u>. </b>The toolkit offers this directly about the election: “Think about how the election might influence the ways students will engage with your class content in the weeks or days leading up to Nov. 3, and afterwards. If related,
it might be useful to connect class content or goals explicitly with the election and the issues at stake. Even if your course has no apparent relation to the election, it may be helpful to have a contingency plan in place for the first few days after Nov.
3. For instance, at the beginning of the first class after election day, it might be appropriate to provide students with a short moment of reflection, perhaps using <a href="https://blogs.uoregon.edu/keepteaching/files/2020/05/Turbulent-Moment-Reflection-Prompts.pdf">a
set of guided prompts</a>, before you move forward in the usual way; or, you might consider building on a moment of student reflection by facilitating a deeper discussion that connects the work of the class with the election. At the very least, a simple acknowledgement
of the election and its stakes—and being prepared to be flexible concerning due dates and your schedule—can be helpful. “<o:p></o:p></span></li><li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">In addition to the Provost’s Teaching Academy and the TEP Toolkit<b>, the University Counseling Services is offering a few programs for student support during the election</b>. <a href="webextlink://Namely,%20there%20are%20three%20things%20that%20they’re%20offering:%20our%20discussion%20groups,%20special%20Let’s%20(Tele)Talk%20hours,%20and%20two%20workshops.">Namely,
there are three things that they’re offering: our discussion groups, special Let’s (Tele)Talk hours, and two workshops.</a><o:p></o:p></span></li><ul style="margin-top:0in" type="circle">
<li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-list:l0 level2 lfo1"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">The five student discussion spaces they’re offering this year are support groups for some of our marginalized student communities (i.e., LatinX/Undocumented, International
students, ADPI students, Black students, and gender expansive students). They’re weekly drop-in groups, so they imagine that week will be focused on how students are affected by the election. <o:p></o:p></span></li><li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-list:l0 level2 lfo1"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">Also, you might have received information about the Let’s (Tele)Talk drop-in consultation program; they’ll be adding more hours that week where the UCS staff will be available
for students to talk individually to UCS staff members to get support around the election. <o:p></o:p></span></li><li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-list:l0 level2 lfo1"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">Last but not least, they offer weekly Wellness Workshops on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 2PM. That particular week the Wednesday Stress and Anxiety Management workshop will
have a focus on election stress along with their rotating Thursday workshop - Post-Election Recovery. <o:p></o:p></span></li></ul>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">Following faculty discussion, the COE has finalized its list of essential department services and submitted the list to the Office of the Provost. Department committees on
equity and inclusion were retained, college-level committee service was considered in terms of critical content, and content that required faculty input was prioritized. <b>Departmental services that have been defined as essential for AY20-21:</b> COE curriculum
committee, Faculty personnel committees (TTF and Career Track), Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee and related activities, Dean’s Student Advisory board, Department Head Council, and Consortium for the Improvement of Professional Education. <b>Services
that have been deemed by the faculty as non-essential for this academic year include</b> the following: Scholarship committee (can be replaced by internal review), Faculty and staff awards committee (can be replaced by internal review), Doctoral research awards
committee (can be replaced by internal review), Research and Outreach Committee (Fall hiatus), Faculty Advisory Committee (All year), Policy review committee (Fall hiatus), Faculty annual reviews not required by the CBA, Peer teaching evaluations, unless needed
for upcoming promotion or major reviews (peer teaching evaluations are optional this year per OtP), Some external service to the profession as faculty deem appropriate (e.g., convention program committees, professional society service committees, etc.). In
addition, the Scholarship committee, faculty and staff awards committee, and doctoral research awards committee will be reevaluated following the present crisis to determine the best approach moving forward.<o:p></o:p></span></li></ul>
