Ducks Give is Almost Here - Thursday, May 14, 2026
Mark your calendars: Ducks Give Day is Thursday, May 14, 2026. This year, the College of Education has over $63,000 in challenge gifts to unlock by reaching 180 gifts. There are several ways to get involved:

  *   See the Duck! The Duck is touring campus for Ducks Give Day. Stop by the HEDCO lobby on May 14 from 12:35-12:50 p.m. to grab a photo with the Duck before he's gone!
  *   Ducks Give Rally: Join the College of Education Development team on Wednesday, May 13, from 1-4 p.m. in HEDCO 230T to receive support on sharing information about Ducks Give with your network!
  *   Swag + Giving: On May 14, say hello to the Development team in the HEDCO lobby and pick up COE-branded gloves when you make a gift to the College of Education.

Ambassadors receive social media graphics, templates, and other tools to share Ducks Give with their networks, track the difference they are making in real time, and receive exclusive swag.
  *   EMU Student Event: This student-focused event features thank you card writing, pizza, make your own bouquets, visits from Caesar the No-Drama Llama and the Duck, performances from the Art Cart and Oregon Marching Band, and a photobooth. 11:30am-2:30pm, EMU Amphitheatre.
  *   Faculty and Staff Ice Cream Social: Any faculty and staff who make a gift on Ducks Give are welcome to join us for a sundae. 3:30-4:30pm, Ducks Give HQ (Ford Alumni Center Giustina Ballroom).

HEDCO Café Closed for Summer
The Education Station Café in the HEDCO Lobby will be closed this summer. The café will have limited hours during finals week (open 8:00-4:00 Monday through Wednesday and open 8:00-2:00 Thursday and Friday) and then will be closed for summer starting Monday June 15th. The café will re-open during the Week of Welcome starting Monday September 21st.  This year's café closure extends to the library café as well. All retail cafes in the academic buildings will be closed for summer except for Riverfront Bistro in the Knight Campus Building 2.

American Educational Research Association Award
Congratulations to Professor Lisa Mazzei who, along with her collaborator Dr. Alecia Jackson, were recently awarded the 2026 Dangerous Coagulations Award<https://www.aera.net/SIG045/Awards> from AERA's Critical Posthuman and Postfoundational Studies in Education SIG. This award recognizes collaborative research teams whose work has pushed the boundaries of educational research and made exceptional contributions to post-foundational studies in education.

Associate Professor Ilana Umansky, PhD and QRME doctoral student Havisha Khurana examine how keeping California students who have already demonstrated English proficiency in EL status influence their academic and behavioral outcomes compared to being reclassified.

Chronic absenteeism is one of the biggest challenges K-12 schools face across the United States. A new report from the HEDCO Institute at the University of Oregon offers promising approaches to reduce chronic absenteeism, including curriculum changes and better communication with parents.

Leona Tyler Distinguished Lecture

Dr. Mark Eddy, Margie Gurley Seay Centennial Professor in Education at The University of Texas at Austin, will present this year's Leona Tyler Distinguished Lecture, entitled "Call and Answer: Professional Youth Mentoring and Encouragement of Constructive, Natural, Life-Long Developmental Processes".  A reception will follow. All are welcome!
