Dean’s Message

Dear COE Community,

Thank you for the many notes of congratulations in response to today’s announcement. I am stepping into the role of Dean of the College of Education with deep gratitude and genuine excitement. It is an honor and privilege to serve this college, surrounded by people who care so deeply about our students and about each other.



Over the coming weeks and months, I look forward to continuing to learn more about the programs, partnerships, and innovations that make this place so special. I am eager to champion your work and support our continued growth in ways that reflect our shared values and mission.



Thank you again for the warm welcome. I am excited about the great things we will accomplish together and grateful for the opportunity to serve this remarkable community. Wishing you all a restful and rejuvenating spring break.

Updates and Upcoming

Call for Award Nominations: UO Outstanding Research Awards

Together, the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, the Office of the Provost, and the Division of Graduate Studies annually host and sponsor the UO Achievement Awards. The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation is pleased to announce this year’s call for nominations for the Outstanding Research Awards<https://research.uoregon.edu/about/research-excellence>.



The Outstanding Research Award has six, themed categories with varied eligibility. Awardees of these categories receive commendation from the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, including $1,000 (or $2,500 for a team) in research support, a recognition memento, and highlighting of their work in internal and external communications.



Nominations are made through the online Nomination Submission Form<https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/3b254b4fbcef4be687bbefec4f445059> and must include a nomination letter and CV. The deadline for nominations is April 17, 2026

Many California students remain classified as English learners despite demonstrating fluency. A new study by Associate Professor Ilana Umansky, PhD, and QRME doctoral student Havisha Khurana provides key evidence supporting reforms to California’s English learner reclassification policies.

Yvonne Fasold, a three‑time UO graduate in English, Interdisciplinary English and Education, and Curriculum and Instruction (’67, ’69, ’92), built a 40‑year career as a creative, student‑centered educator before retiring and continuing her service as an active community volunteer. A College of Education donor for over twenty years, Yvonne has helped future teachers prepare to meet the diverse learning needs of students through scholarship support.
