The Monthly Vol. 5 #3
Dean's Message
Dear COE Community,
It is hard to believe fall term is here, and this is my last monthly message of the summer before I transition to weekly messages during the academic year.
I look forward to seeing many of you at our fall kickoff festivities on September 25th, first at the Dean's Welcome Lunch in Kendall Plaza, followed by the Dan Reschly Distinguished Lecture in HEDCO 220. Being in community feels particularly important during challenging times like these.
I also hope to see many of you at our faculty and staff meeting on October 3rd, where I will provide an update on the UO budget situation and its impact on our college, and hold an open Q&A session to discuss these issues.
Amidst these challenges, it can be empowering to remember why we are here. We are each here because we are passionate about supporting the next generation of leaders who will help children, families, and communities thrive. May this purpose serve as a source of hope and inspiration about the exciting possibilities for the year ahead.
Best wishes,
Emily
Updates and Upcoming
Dan Reschly Distinguished Lecture
Thursday September 25, HEDCO 220
1:30-2:30pm Public Presentation, followed by Q&A and reception
Please join the College of Education for the second annual Dan Reschly Distinguished Lecture. This year's lecture features Alfredo J. Artiles, PhD who will be sharing his findings on disability intersections research. The Dan Reschly Distinguished Lecture Series brings renowned research experts to the University of Oregon campus to discuss topics related to the prevention/intervention of problems in educational achievement, behavior disorders, disability status, and mental health challenges among children and youth.
Alfredo J. Artiles, PhD is the Lee L. Jacks Professor of Education at Stanford University. He is the Director of the Research Institute at Stanford's Center for Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity. His programmatic scholarship engages the questions "how do educational equity remedies create new injustices and what are effective ways to reduce these paradoxes?" His scholarship documents how responses to disability intersections with race, social class, gender, and language advance or hinder educational opportunities across student groups. Dr. Artiles edits the book series Futures of Disability in Worlds of Difference (Harvard Education Press). He has served on three consensus panels of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Dr. Artiles is President-elect of the National Academy of Education, was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and is a Fellow of AERA. He and his colleagues have led federally funded national and regional technical assistance initiatives to address educational inequities. Dr. Artiles received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Göteborgs (Sweden) and was Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom). He is a Distinguished Alumni of the University of Virginia School of Education.
