The Weekly Vol. 6 #33

Dear COE Community,

As we turn the corner and approach the end of the term, I have a tremendous sense of gratitude to each of our faculty and staff for their work during this academic year. I would like to spend the next few weeks recognizing some of our team for their accomplishments.

Tiffany Yep and Jennifer McGovney – thank you for your work in support of the Youth Movement event (more below…including photos!). Your support on the finance and operation side is much appreciated.

Teo Reyes-Ramirez – thank you for your support of faculty who have had grants cut (and who are reorganizing their teams and their work) as well as supporting faculty in getting grants submitted and out the door.

Lisa Mazzei and Angie Whalen – thank you for successfully leading a number of promotion workshops this year. The rollout has gone well and I’m appreciative of your work in support of faculty development.

Amy Green – thank you for your vision in putting together a Year of Welcome for new (and newish) faculty in our COE.

Beth Stormshak, John Seeley, and team – thank you for bringing in an $11 million center grant on school mental health at a time when we needed good news on the grant front! Your team involves multiple faculty from COE, PSI, and the Ballmer Institute. Congrats!

Jerry Rosiek – thank you for your community-building in EDST (and college-wide) and for your incredible mentorship of your doctoral students.

That’s it for this week’s installment. Stay tuned for more gratitude in future emails.

Warmly,
Laura Lee

Spotlights and Recognition
Graduate and Alumni Spotlights

New Grant Awarded
Congratulations to Leslie Leve on receiving a new NIH grant with Maria Schweer-Collins, former PREV PhD student and now Assistant Professor at Iowa State University!

Project: “Preventing Substance Use Among Youth in Foster Care Through Collaborative Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Brief Intervention”

Details: Maria Schweer-Collins (PI) and Leslie Leve (MPI) received a new 5-year R01 award from NIDA that will leverage a robust existing service delivery program for youth in foster care, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs), to deliver an evidence-based intervention (EBI) specifically focused on trauma-informed substance use prevention. Working with CASAs in the state of Oregon, they will use a hybrid type 1 effectiveness implementation randomized trial to test whether the adapted intervention improves substance use outcomes for foster youth compared to CASA services-as-usual. Maria is the contact PI and will lead this work from her new institution, Iowa State University. Given that CASA is currently in 49 U.S. states, serving approximately 242,000 (60%) youth in foster care, the potential for scalability and reach is exceptional if the current project demonstrates that the EBI delivered by CASAs effectively prevents substance use and improves outcomes for youth foster youth.

Youth Movement Event Success
The Native American Student Union (NASU) student leaders and Sapsik’wałá students hosted 75 Native youth from various schools and programs throughout the state, as well as two Tribal communities in Washington and California. The event was a huge success! Thank you to everyone involved. Below are two photos of our participants:
