Dear COE Community,

I write to seek nominations for the next Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Education. Dr. Sylvia Thompson will be completing her 3-year term as Associate Dean at the end of spring term 2025 (thank you, Sylvia!) and I seek nominations this winter to fill this position for the upcoming year.

NOMINATION PROCESS:

COE faculty and staff are invited to nominate (or self-nominate) for the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Please provide names of nominees to me (llmcinty at uoregon.edu<mailto:llmcinty at uoregon.edu>) with a cc to Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann (dcarriza at uoregon.edu<mailto:dcarriza at uoregon.edu>) by March 14th.

The appointment is anticipated to be a 3-year term. The FTE for the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the COE is .25 FTE during the academic year and .25 FTE summer. The academic year FTE is generally taken as two course releases. In addition, an annual stipend of $10,000 ($833.33/month) is provided. Please note that faculty assuming these roles are required to teach a minimum of one course per year per our workload policy.

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (ADAA) is responsible for overseeing and guiding the academic mission and providing oversight of academic processes and policies in the COE, including curriculum, and faculty/student grievances. In addition, the ADAA provides leadership to and supports the integration of the academic and research within the academic programs. The ADAA is part of the Dean's Leadership Team and participates in regular academic affairs meetings within the Dean's Team and program director meetings college-wide, as well as liaises with the Office of the Provost regarding our COE academic programs.

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is selected and appointed by the COE Dean from tenured faculty members at the rank of Associate Professor or higher. A faculty member may serve any number of consecutive or non-consecutive terms as Associate Dean at the discretion of the Dean based on satisfactory annual performance reviews.

There are numerous faculty among our ranks who have held leadership roles in the Dean's Office and who may be willing to answer your questions as you consider self-nominating or nominating someone for this rewarding role. I am also available for any questions you may have as you consider this opportunity. I look forward to your nominations and to another successful appointment this role for our college.

I would like to close by expressing my gratitude to Dr. Sylvia Thompson for her steady leadership during a time of incredible transition in our college (and the institution)!

Dr. Thompson started her role as Associate Dean at a transitional time for the COE and made "transition" her hallmark legacy in this role by being instrumental in the myriad of transitional activities that have marked the three years of her tenure in this position. Sylvia sat on four College of Education policy committees, was central in the university transition to policy liaisons for academic policies, the integration of the COSA educational leadership programming, while supporting the academic activities across the college. I have appreciated Sylvia's thoughtful implementation of new policy procedures and her contributions to the leadership of the college over the past three years. I express my utmost gratitude to Sylvia for her leadership and am excited that she'll be returning to her full-time faculty role for the 2025-26 academic year. I know she is looking forward to taking a well-earned sabbatical!

Sylvia remains in this role throughout the remainder of the current academic year. I hope to identify an incoming Associate Dean for Academic Affairs late winter or early spring so that they may have opportunities to engage in some light shadowing with Sylvia this Spring and step into leadership this summer, with full responsibilities beginning September 16th, 2025.

Please consider this opportunity for yourself or a colleague and send your nominations by March 14th to me with a cc to Dianna.

Thanks in advance.

With gratitude,

Laura Lee
