Debates about disability intersections with race, language, and other differences have persisted for decades. Scholars have raised equity concerns about misidentification or the erosion of educational opportunities for learning. There is consensus that this knowledge base should be refined due to theoretical gaps and methodological limits. In this presentation, Dr. Artiles will discuss research evidence from urban and suburban school districts and review research with multilingual learners that make visible the role of systemic and contextual issues in shaping disability intersections. Building on these insights, Dr. Artiles will argue for a situated approach to study disability intersections and outline opportunities to build an interdisciplinary research program that better captures the complexities of this issue.

Meet Alfredo J. Artiles, PhD
Alfredo J. Artiles, PhD is the Lee L. Jacks Professor of Education at Stanford University. He is the Director of the Research Institute at Stanford’s Center for Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity. His programmatic scholarship engages the questions “how do educational equity remedies create new injustices and what are effective ways to reduce these paradoxes?” His scholarship documents how responses to disability intersections with race, social class, gender, and language advance or hinder educational opportunities across student groups. Dr. Artiles edits the book series Futures of Disability in Worlds of Difference (Harvard Education Press). He has served on three consensus panels of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Dr. Artiles is President-elect of the National Academy of Education, was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and is a Fellow of AERA. He and his colleagues have led federally funded national and regional technical assistance initiatives to address educational inequities. Dr. Artiles received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Göteborgs (Sweden) and was Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom). He is a Distinguished Alumni of the University of Virginia School of Education.
