The Monthly Vol. 5 #2

Dean’s Message

Dear COE Community,

I hope you are managing to stay cool and recharge this summer. Since stepping into this interim dean role, it has been a pleasure meeting with many of you and hearing about the exciting work you're doing. I am proud to be part of this community that cares so deeply about supporting future generations to be a force for social good.

As many of you are aware, over the past six weeks, I have met extensively with university leadership about the college's financial situation. The unfortunate reality is that the university is facing a large structural budget deficit. This is anticipated to worsen over time as expected growth in expenses will exceed expected growth in revenue (for more detail, see the June Board of Trustees materials<https://trustees.uoregon.edu/sites/default/files/2025-05/final-june-bot-packet.pdf>). Combined with a budget model that currently prioritizes undergraduate revenue, and with the ongoing threats to federal research funding, this creates a dire financial scenario for our college. I am grateful to former Dean McIntyre for starting this spring on some of the difficult, but necessary reductions needed to balance our budget. Additional budget reductions will be required, and, as with the decisions made this spring, every one of these reductions will be painful. To guide such difficult decisions, I will be using these principles [[pdf icon] COE Budget Reduction Principles.pdf<https://uoregon.sharepoint.com/:b:/s/O365_COEExecutiveAssistantRole/EXHy2yyEC-JJkP4zR2F2xJUBH8hbxK4eytPw6u6PLrsj0w?e=MwUjIj>], which prioritize consultation and transparency balanced with discretion.

With these principles in mind, I have made the decision to implement an academic faculty hiring freeze in the college. This will pause COE hiring of any career or tenure-related faculty assigned to teach academic courses. This pause impacts searches that were planned as well as searches already underway.

I understand the disappointment that comes with this news and share the frustration of the need to postpone our plans for stability and growth in the years ahead. This was not an easy decision to make, but after consulting broadly, my goal was to prioritize our commitment to existing faculty. This hiring freeze has already been communicated to search committee chairs, and I once again extend my gratitude to those chairs and members of the three affected search committees for their hard work thus far and their grace in receiving this news.

I have also begun some difficult discussions around future plans (e.g., changes in GE support for new PhD students beginning fall 2026) and will share more information as those discussions stabilize into next steps. Thank you to those who have already been engaging with me and sending your input thus far.

We will be facing more challenges ahead and so I continue to ask for your compassion, understanding, and participation in difficult conversations as we collectively navigate these choppy waters. We are a creative and resilient community, so I look forward to engaging with you all in the coming months.

May the uplifting announcements below remind us why we are here and why our work matters now more than ever.

Best wishes,

Emily

SAIL Program Participants

Thank you to Alison Schmitke, Jeanine Brush, and Liz Budd for providing sessions on COE undergraduate majors to high school students from the Eugene/Springfield area. Each summer the COE and many departments on campus participate in the SAIL program<https://fyp.uoregon.edu/sail> (Student Academy to Inspire Learning) which brings the students to campus to acclimate them to the idea of going to college. The program focuses on low-income, first generation, diverse, or underrepresented students. They spend a week learning about how to apply to college, tips for essay writing, financial aid available to them, and information about academic majors.
