Dear COE Community,
Welcome to spring term (and thank goodness it looks like we averted a faculty strike). If you’re like me, you were wondering if and how we would get here and how we move forward together in developing more transparent and authentic communication and trust that is necessary to promote our shared interests and goals at the university. Beyond the faculty union and administration negotiations, there is a lot going on. Spring term often feels like the final push before summer, and we work hard to support our students to wrap up their courses and requirements. Rather than standing on the sidelines, it often feels like we’re sprinting alongside our students as they finish up their degrees and prepare to graduate. Thank you, faculty and staff, for sprinting!
As the year unfolds, we’re also learning more about the impacts of the federal administration transition on issues that we care deeply about in the College of Education. I invite you to stay up to date and stay engaged at the unit level, college level, and institutional level. We rely on your observations and insights to best inform our college plans to support our faculty, staff, and students. As an example, John Seeley and I, along with colleagues in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, are carefully gathering information on impacted grants, lost opportunities (calls for proposals being rescinded or not posted at all), and impacts on our research staff, faculty, and students. We will be spending time at an upcoming Research and Outreach Council meeting discussing how we would like to gather information from individual research centers so that we can develop plans to support our people and our COE priorities. Thanks, in advance, for engaging with us on this important work.
As we move into spring, I would like to highlight three actions that I am taking, and I invite you to take as well. My hope is that these actions will make our COE community more inclusive and more supportive to all.
1. Surround myself with others who hold different viewpoints from my own. Ask questions, be curious, and listen.
2. Pause before reacting. Create space to process and reflect.
3. Celebrate the day-to-day work and accomplishments. During times of stress or anxiety, we can lose sight of what we are doing and the ways that our work makes a positive difference in the lives of others.
While the above three actions are inherently simple, I struggle with implementing them consistently but am striving each day to engage in intentional growth. I welcome you to join me on this path.
Wishing you a beautiful Week 1. Thanks for your contributions to strengthening our College. We’re better because of you.
Warmly,
Laura Lee
Updates and Upcoming
New Name for CPAN
We are excited to share an important update—The Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect (CPAN) has evolved into the Center for Childhood Safety and Wellbeing (CSAW). This change reflects our expanded mission to address systemic factors that impact childhood safety, strengthen community resilience, and advocate for policies that create the conditions where all children, youth and families can thrive. CSAW continues to serve as a hub for innovative research, education, and community engagement, working alongside university partners, nonprofits, and public agencies to promote child wellbeing across Oregon and beyond. For more information, visit csaw.uoregon.edu<http://csaw.uoregon.edu/> or reach out to csawadmin at uoregon.edu<mailto:csawadmin at uoregon.edu>.

UO Annual Outstanding Employee Award Nominations Open
