Dear COE Community,
Welcome to Week 9 where Wednesday feels like a Tuesday (and possibly we all wish it were Friday). Spring is a busy time of year, and the final few weeks of the term can feel like an all-out sprint. Take a moment to check in with yourself, your colleagues, students, and those you support. As things wind down for the academic year, remember small victories and successes that were unexpected. Thank those who contributed to projects, tasks, or activities. Appreciate the work that’s been accomplished. Academia is a team sport and everyone is critical to our success. I’m grateful for each of you!
We have an in-person faculty and staff meeting next Friday (June 7th) followed by a family-friendly picnic and social. We have our faculty and staff awards to announce and will be wrapping up the academic year with some important updates. We would love your participation and appreciate the opportunities to connect and appreciate the work we’ve accomplished this year.
With gratitude,
Laura Lee
Updates and Upcoming:
Investiture of President Karl Scholz | May 30th
The community is encouraged to attend the ceremony and celebration that marks the formal installation of John Karl Scholz as the 19th president of the University of Oregon. An investiture is a time for the university to celebrate the values, achievements, and aspirations of our community. The ceremony will include remarks from the president, board chair, president of the University Senate, student member of the Board of Trustees, and others. The ceremony<https://president.uoregon.edu/investiture> will be held on May 30th from 3:30pm to 5:00pm at the Matthew Knight Arena or virtually.
University of Oregon and United Academics Bargaining Session
The university and United Academics held a bargaining session on May 23. A variety of topics were discussed, including evaluation of tenure-track and tenured faculty, support for research faculty, sabbatical, and facilities. The HR website has been updated with the latest proposals and counteroffers<https://hr.uoregon.edu/ua-bargaining-list-proposals> and a summary update<https://hr.uoregon.edu/ua-bargaining-information-and-updates> of bargaining to keep you informed. The next bargaining session is scheduled for June 13.
University of Oregon and UO Student Workers
Employee and Labor Relations and UOSW union representatives met on May 29 as part of the collective bargaining process. The parties have been engaged in ongoing discussions about the bargaining timeline, logistics, and ground rules to establish a framework for negotiations. The parties will use upcoming meetings to get the bargaining process started before the end of the spring term. It is important to keep in mind that UO Student Workers is a new union to the UO representing student employees, so it will likely take an extended period of time to exchange initial proposals, negotiate terms, and reach a tentative agreement on a collective bargaining agreement.
