Dear COE Community,

I appreciate each of you in our college. Your contributions to our mission make a difference to our students and create a welcoming and inclusive environment. Yesterday’s commencement ceremony was nothing short of wonderful. I was inspired by our students’ resilience, joy, hard work, and sacrifices. I was delighted to see so many faculty and staff participate and volunteer to make the event run smoothly. Although I don’t have an official headcount, the audience was one of the largest I’ve seen in many years. We celebrated and honored the accomplishments of 424 graduating College of Education students. That number represents 41 doctoral students, 157 master’s students (more than any other school or college at UO), 195 bachelor’s students, and 31 administrative licensure students. I can’t wait to see what our Education Duck family will accomplish next!

I’m grateful for the 44 outstanding staff (and faculty) volunteers who made the day possible. Lisa Fortin’s efforts to organize such a beautiful celebration for our graduates and their families paid off. Thank you, Lisa, for all your planning, problem-solving, coordinating, and wrangling. We are lucky to have you in the College of Education and benefit from your leadership and experience with event planning. Lisa organized a wonderful team of staff to assist. My gratitude goes to:

  * Tyler Snyder and Alex Pagnucco who worked on commencement things in advance of the day and then provided much needed leadership and support during the day.
  * Outstanding Line Guides: Sara Loveless, Talia Keene, Jody Ferguson, Kayla Grosjean, Nisa Ali, and Willow Gutierrez
  * Our fabulous student and faculty check-in team members: Angela Dornbusch, Denise McKenney, Abby Shepler, Danette Roberson, Carina Kelson, Carmen Cybula, Amy Harter, Autum Loverin (Autum also helped at the photo booth!), and Trina Hmura
  * Amy Harter for guiding the students on stage
  * Keri Baker and Megan Cave for assisting with the Doctoral Reception
  * Adam Pritt and Jo Ann Arinder who are always finding ways to make our streaming better!
  * Eric Owens for procuring our own COE golf cart to help shuttle folks around
  * Kim Boyd and Kristen King, who were there early to set up signs and then stayed late to continue to help out
  * Amy Green, who managed stage set-up
  * Information and program table support: Dylan Lee, Danielle Wenning, Kaitlyn Adams, Jen Davis
  * ADA Seating/Side Aisle Manager: Esther Harclerode
  *   Post-even clean-up: Tiffany Yep
  * Graduating student name readers: Doctoral student reader Sylvia Linan-Thompson, CPHS faculty Karrie Walters, EDST faculty Katie Fitch and Puja Clifford, EDLD faculty Julie Alonzo, SPECS faculty Kyle Reardon
  * Diploma cover distribution support: Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann and Zeni Colorado-Resa
  * Communication team for phots/video messages/social media posts: Julie Vickers, Emily Barker, Juls Davis, Will Barker

I certainly hope I didn’t forget anyone! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I send this message today – Tuesday – because tomorrow is Juneteenth<https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/historical-legacy-juneteenth#:~:text=Freedom%20finally%20came%20on%20June,newly%20freed%20people%20in%20Texas.> a UO, state, and federal<https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2024/06/18/a-proclamation-on-juneteenth-day-of-observance-2024/> holiday. As a community, we create hope for a better future by acknowledging our past and taking steps to repair and restore. We have a responsibility and shared commitment to justice, inclusion, equity, community, and belonging. I hope your Juneteenth holiday is meaningful and you create some pause to reflect on our past and take positive action for our future.

This is the last Weekly email of the 2023-24 academic year. We will switch to a monthly installment beginning next month. I would be remiss if I didn’t conclude this message by saying that this academic year marks the end of my first full year as your permanent dean. I have appreciated this opportunity to grow and learn from and with you. Thank you for your partnership and for being a part of our community. I appreciate how each of faculty and staff plays an important role in our shared endeavors.

With gratitude,

Laura Lee
