About Morgan Oates
Morgan Oates is a PhD candidate (ABD) in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science at The Ohio State University, with a Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Disability Studies. A two-time OSU alum, Morgan received her MA in Speech-Language Pathology in 2019, and her BA in Linguistics and Speech and Hearing Science with a minor in Spanish in 2017. Following her MA, she worked clinically as a speech-language pathologist with the Madison-Champaign Educational Service Center, serving pre-K through post-secondary students, including many autistic students and AAC users. Morgan's research program is centered on understanding and supporting autistic language and communication through the lens of neurodiversity. Her background in speech-language pathology and linguistics motivates her descriptive approach to determining the factors that may best support communication and autistic well-being. To date, her work touches on the effects of neurotype on communication and language, neurodiversity-affirming supports for adolescent and adult autistic individuals, the experiences of autistic SLPs, and the intersections of gender and autism in language development. She has presented her research at multiple local and national conferences. She served on Language and Learning in School Age Individuals Topic Strand Committee for the 2023 ASHA Convention, and she served on the Graduate Studies Committee in her department for two years.
