I hope you are all staying safe and warm during this crazy winter storm (and the aftermath of the ice, snow, and freezing rain). The power outages and ice damage has been widespread. Please take a moment to check in on your students, colleagues, neighbors and friends. These types of crises have differential impacts on our community.

UO researchers to study the health effects of homelessness: ATO Story

Amid the recent icy weather, new research, in collaboration with PSI’s Camille Cioffi, sheds light on the health impact of housing and homelessness. This work aims to inform future policy and program support for the vulnerable, providing hope for the future. As a Prevention Science PhD program alumna, Camille co-leads an internal UO grant tied to this research and is featured in a new article<https://around.uoregon.edu/content/uo-researchers-study-health-effects-homelessness?utm_source=ato01-17-24> in AroundtheO<https://around.uoregon.edu/>. Weathering the past five days has been tough, emphasizing the greater challenges faced by those without permanent shelter. Aligned with PSI's mission, this research contributes to practical solutions promoting the health of children, families, individuals, and communities through research-informed programs.



Navigating the Path of Neurodivergent Educators in Special Education

Neurodivergent educators, crucial for connecting with special education students, encounter challenges such as unsupportive environments, burnout, and ableism. In OPB's "In The News<https://www.opb.org/article/2023/12/16/neurodivergent-autism-adhd-teachers-educators-education-schools-disability-oregon/>," Alex Newson, a former special education teacher and current doctoral candidate at the University of Oregon, explores the experiences of autistic educators.



Faculty Spotlight: Sara Schmitt, PhD

Meet Sara Schmitt, PhD<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/sped/all/sschmitt>, Bricker/Squires Faculty Chair in Early Intervention and Associate Professor of Special Education. Originally from Eau Claire, WI, Sara's research centers on children's self-regulation and school readiness, with a focus on the impact of early intervention. Dedicated to transforming children's lives and addressing disparities in underserved communities, Sara encourages students to experience the empowering environment of the College of Education at the UO. Alumni Spotlight: Taralee Suppah

Explore the journey of Taralee Suppah (Ahshamnasho), a Sapsik'ʷałá alumna, in the Alumni Spotlight<https://education.uoregon.edu/alumni-taralee-suppah>. A 2007 graduate from the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs (OR), Taralee transitioned from a paraprofessional to a dedicated teacher, integrating culture and language into her classroom. With 15 years of teaching experience, she highlights the University of Oregon's Sapsik'ʷałá program's impact on preserving cultural identity and fostering an indigenized classroom at Wyoming Indian Elementary School.
