Welcome back to campus and Week 1 of the term. I hope many of you were able to enjoy some time off. Winter term is busy and we all have full plates. I’m excited about the faculty hiring and student admissions work that is happening now and look forward to continuing to build strength in our community through inclusive practices that honor and celebrate our growing COE!

MLK DAY 2024 | Be Oregon: Empowering our Beloved Community

Join us for the final day of Be Oregon: Empowering our Beloved Community<https://inclusion.uoregon.edu/rev-dr-martin-luther-king-jr-campus-and-community-events> , honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2024 with impactful events. Day 1 started with a welcome and MLK Community Breakfast at Tykeson Family Hall, Ford Alumni Center, followed by a visit to UO's Northeast Portland Campus. Engage in insightful dialogues with ASUO Senators, Departments, and UO Administration, exploring Diversity Action Planning and bridging gaps. Day 2 at EMU features a Land Acknowledgement and a "Lightening Round" Listening Luncheon with President Scholz. Don't miss campus strategies, working groups, MLK recognitions, and more. Come inspire change and empower our community!



COE Student Scholarship Application Review | Invitation to COE staff and Faculty

Join us for the annual COE student scholarship application review. The application reviews are conducted entirely online, taking place from 2/16 – 3/8. Your involvement helps support our students and ensure the success of the scholarship program. UO Responsive Mentorship Program | Winter Workshops

The UO Responsive Mentorship<https://provost.uoregon.edu/mentorship-reimagined#workshops> program is offering four unique 90-minute sessions on 1/29 from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Explore "Journeys in Mentorship," "Mentoring and You," "Evidence-Based Mentoring," and "Practicing Mentorship" individually or as a cohesive course. Additionally, a 1-hour Zoom workshop will be held on 2/15 from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm, focusing on mentor skills, and another session for mentees on 2/19, 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., to build a robust mentorship network. Register now for these enriching sessions and connect with a UO community of practice relevant to your role.



Oregon Summit on Science of Reading in Higher Education

Join us for the 1st Oregon Summit on Science of Reading in Higher Education<https://www.readingscience.org/event-details-registration/1st-oregon-summit-on-science-of-reading-in-higher-education>, a special event happening in conjunction with the Oregon RTIi conference in Eugene this spring. Hosted by Mount St. Joseph's University's Center for Reading Science and Stronger Together - The Alliance for Reading Science in Higher Education (STARS-HE), this summit takes place on 4/4 from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm at the Graduate Hotel in Eugene. Don't miss out on an opportunity to engage in discussions and insights about the science of reading in higher education.

Megan Kunze Selected as CATIE Fellow

Megan Kunze<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/sped/all/mkunze>, a faculty member in our early intervention program, has been selected as a Fellow for the 2024 IES-funded Comprehensive Program for Adaptive Interventions Training in Education (CATIE<https://www.catie.space/apply>) at the University of Michigan. Being chosen for this prestigious program is a testament to Megan's expertise and dedication. This opportunity not only reflects positively on her accomplishments but also enhances the quality of education in our institution. Join us in congratulating Megan on this remarkable achievement!



Spencer Foundation for Racial Equity Research in Education | Edward M. Olivos' RaLiCaM Project Funded

Edward M. Olivos<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/edf/all/emolivos>' proposal, "Racial literacy, capabilities and curriculum-making," has secured funding under the Spencer Foundation Racial Equity Research Grants<https://www.spencer.org/grant_types/racial-equity-special-research-grants> program. As Principal Investigator at the University of Oregon, Olivos will lead the RaLiCaM research project, exploring how heightened racial literacy influences emancipatory curriculum-making in grade 9-11 geography and history classes. The $74,964.00 grant supports this rigorous and intellectually ambitious initiative to address and alleviate racial inequality in education. Collaborating with colleagues from the University of San Diego and University College London Institute of Education, the project is scheduled to run from 5/1/24 to 10/31/25.



Leslie Leve Selected for the Graduate Writing Mentorship Program

Leslie Leve<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/faculty/all/leve> has been selected for the January 2024 Graduate Writing Mentorship Program<https://calendar.uoregon.edu/event/graduate_writing_mentorship_program>. This collaborative initiative by CoDaC, TEP, and the Division of Graduate Studies addresses the gap in faculty training for teaching graduate student writing. Led by Mike Murashige, Ph.D., the six-session curriculum focuses on advanced mentoring strategies, covering the student-mentor relationship, time-efficient instruction, and practical aspects of drafting, revising, and publishing. Leslie Leve's participation underscores her commitment to enhancing mentoring skills for guiding graduate students in academic writing.



Student Spotlight | Kacie Waddell

In a recent spotlight interview, Kacie Waddell<https://education.uoregon.edu/kacie-waddell-sped> shared her experience as a student in the Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education Distance Learning program. She balances a full-time job with parenting five children, and greatly values the program's flexibility. With aspirations to become a supervisor in Early Intervention, Kacie also values the program's emphasis on challenges as opportunities for growth.
