Dear COE Community,
We made it to the end of fall term, grades are submitted (hopefully), and faculty and staff have a quiet period to look forward to. The Dean's Weekly will be taking a break too and will resume on January 8, 2025. Over the break I'll be hard at work recruiting tenure track faculty to join our college, writing some promotion and tenure letters, and also enjoying comfy, cozy days in sweatpants, hanging with my family, and feeling gratitude for the people that bring me joy.
Thanks all for making our college community so special and for your dedication to supporting our students and each other.
Warm wishes for a fabulous winter break,
Laura Lee

Article: Financial stewardship key to the UO's long-term success<https://news.uoregon.edu/content/financial-stewardship-key-uos-long-term-success-0>
Colleges and universities across the nation are facing tough economic headwinds and fiscal discipline will be especially important for the University of Oregon in the next several years. UO's financial model differs from many of its peers in the American Association of Universities and the Big Ten Conference. This includes key differences in the level of state appropriations, the cost of state-mandated benefits and the degree to which the UO relies on attracting non-resident students. A new website, StrengtheningUO<https://strengtheninguo.org/>, shares information about the UO's funding model in comparison to peer institutions and the principles guiding fiscal decision-making at the UO.

New Grant Awarded
Congratulations to Stephanie De Anda<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/faculty/all/sdeanda> and Camille Cioffi<https://psi.uoregon.edu/camille-cioffi-phd> (MPIs) plus Dave DeGarmo<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/faculty/all/degarmo> and Lauren Cycyk<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/faculty/all/lcycyk> (Co-Is) on receiving grant funding from NIH - National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders!
Title: Evidence-based intervention enhancements to reduce language delays and disorders among children of parents with substance use disorders
Project Narrative: Children of parents with substance use disorders are three times more likely to have a language delay compared to their peers, representing a clear health disparity. Parent-implemented naturalistic communication interventions (PI-NCI) can be used to prevent and intervene on toddler language delays to prevent later developmental language disorders, however, it is unknown whether and to what degree resource-intensive individualized parent supports offer additional benefits over foundational group-based parent education. The study evaluates the comparative effectiveness of individualized supports to augment group-based interventions and the implementation of these PI-NCI modalities to support the widespread adoption and implementation of evidence-based interventions to intervene on the clear inequities in language delays among children of parents with substance use disorders with specific attention to intersectionality.
Project Period: 12/2024 - 11/2029
Welcome Andy Garbacz!
Andy Garbacz<https://edpsych.education.wisc.edu/fac-staff/garbacz-andy/> will be joining our faculty in the Department of Special Education and Clinical Sciences as professor in school psychology this Fall 2025. Dr. Garbacz's research focuses on a) mental health promotion and (b) optimizing mental health interventions in school and community settings to center equity and justice, and improve adoption, implementation, and sustainment. Andy's expertise includes community-engaged research, qualitative methodology, implementation science, large-scale randomized trials, and hybrid (effectiveness-implementation) methodology. Andy co-developed the Family-School Partnerships for Mental Health framework, an approach to build partnerships among families, school professionals, and community mental health professionals to support youth mental health. He also co-developed Resilient Families, a family-school intervention to support students at-risk for internalizing concerns within the Resilience Education Program. Andy contributed to the development of Teachers and Parents as Partners and has an active research program examining the Family Check-Up to promote family wellbeing and youth mental health.
Reminders
UO ID Card will get a new name in fall 2025
Please help facilitate a smooth transition
The UO ID Card is getting a fresh, new identity. It will be known as the Flock Card, a name that reflects our strong sense of community.
Why?
The ID card is commonly confused with the Duck ID and the 95/ID number. Adopting a consistent and unique official name that differentiates the ID card from other university identification sources will provide better clarity and improve the student and employee experience.
When?
The newly designed Flock Card will be phased in over time beginning next summer. It will be issued for the first time during IntroDUCKtion in summer 2025 to incoming students. By fall of 2025, newly hired faculty and staff will also begin receiving the Flock Card.
Current faculty, staff, and students will not be required to replace their existing cards. They may elect to obtain a Flock Card through the ID replacement program<https://emu.uoregon.edu/lost-or-stolen-card>, which has a $28 fee. Lost and nonfunctioning cards will also be replaced with the new Flock Card starting in summer 2025.
What's next?
To facilitate a smooth transition, please help ID Card Services transition the reference of the UO ID card to Flock Card. Making this shift starts with the UO community and the materials distributed by schools, colleges, and units.
Please work with your managers, supervisors, and employees to participate in the transition by:
* Discussing the name change and the timeline at staff meetings.
* Sharing the Flock Card information webpage<https://emu.uoregon.edu/flock-card> broadly.
* Making a plan to update websites, newsletters, training materials, and other forms of communication to replace all references to UO ID card with Flock Card.
* Producing new marketing materials, mass emails, email templates, posters, signs, or other collateral with Flock Card as the name reference.
* Referring those with questions to the UO Card Services Office<https://emu.uoregon.edu/card> for further assistance.
As the UO community gets used to the change, listing the name as "Your Flock Card (UO ID Card)" will help people become familiar with the new name and assist with the transition.
Does the new card get a new look?
Yes! A student-based design contest is underway. This is a unique opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and give them a chance to build up resumes and portfolios. The contest will run through Friday, December 20, 2024. Please encourage students within your school, college, or unit to get involved and submit their design ideas.
Faculty and staff can help determine the winning design by being a part of the selection committee. The Card Services team is looking for a few more people to be part of the selection process. Those interested should contact Emmally Evans at emmally at uoregon.edu<mailto:emmally at uoregon.edu>.
Support and assistance
Thank you for assisting the UO Card Services Office with the preparation and implementation of this exciting change. With your help, the Flock Card will be a source of pride and belonging for the UO community.
Contact the ID Card Services Office at uocard at uoregon.edu<mailto:uocard at uoregon.edu> with questions or if further assistance is needed.
