Dear COE Community,

As we wrap up fall term, I invite you to take a moment to reflect on your accomplishments and contributions to our community. It’s been a busy quarter and your work has not gone unnoticed.

I’ve just returned from the AAU Dean’s meeting in Chicago (last week) followed by a two-day Board of Trustees meeting in Portland. The AAU Dean’s meeting was rich with discussion surrounding navigating the political and educational landscape in 2025 (and beyond), harnessing the power of generative AI in our work with students and in the community, and being explicit about the value proposition of higher education, especially when education is seemingly undervalued in today’s world. It was a wonderful meeting and I came back feeling renewed and grateful to work at the University of Oregon and connected to colleagues I have deep respect for.

At the Board of Trustees meeting, I had an opportunity to support Angie Whalen in her presentation on the school psychology graduate program expansion to Portland and proposal for a new degree – an Education Specialist (Ed.S.). The Board approved the proposal, an important step in the approval process. In Portland I also participated in a youth behavioral and mental health panel discussion, along with graduate students in school psychology, the Ballmer Institute, a school partner/middle school principal, family interventionist from PSI Portland, and Ballmer Institute Executive Director. I appreciated the faculty and students (and alumni and friends) of the College of Education who were in attendance at the event.

This is a busy time of year, but I’m glad each of you is taking the time to connect with the people and projects that you hold dear. Please join the COE community this Friday for an end-of-the-year/holiday dessert reception at 1pm followed by our faculty/staff meeting at 1:30 pm (in HEDCO 220).

Warmly,
Laura Lee
