Dear COE community,

The month of October has flown by in many ways yet has been agonizing as we bear witnesses to the horrific atrocities and loss of human life in Israel and Gaza. There has been an increase in antisemitic and Islamophobic messaging on college campuses across the nation and our shared humanity, safety, and wellbeing may feel threatened. There is no place for hate speech and racial or ethnic driven violence in our community and we collectively stand up for justice. Many may be experiencing pain, fear, and trauma, based on current events or historical trauma. Please reach out to one another; offer your support; demonstrate that you care. There is power and healing in our genuine care for others.

The COE continues to focus on creating a climate that values equity and inclusion and celebrates diversity. Yesterday many of our college leadership participated in a campus-wide climate workshop, led by the Office of the President and Office of the Vice President for Equity and Inclusion. The workshop, structured like a mini conference, was facilitated by peers in units across campus – from student life, to athletics, to human resources, to schools and colleges, such as the Lundquist College of Business. The COE team left feeling inspired (and validated) for our efforts focusing on mentorship, clarifying expectations, and creating community through genuine interactions and shared joy.

And speaking of shared joy, thanks to all who showed up for today’s Donut’s for Ducks. It was fun to see so many of you. A huge shoutout to Lisa Fortin and Tyler Snyder for all their work in making this event happen for our COE Duck Community every term!

Thanks to each of you for your care and commitment to our work, to our students, and to each other.

With gratitude,

Laura Lee
