Dear COE community,
Thanks to all who have participated in our climate survey discussions in the COE. We have concluded our college-wide discussions and are now presenting emerging themes in unit-level conversations. Last week Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann and I met with the Department of Special Education and Clinical Sciences. We have upcoming discussions in the departments of Counseling Psychology and Human Services as well as Education Studies. We also have meetings with the Research and Outreach Council (ROC) and staff not affiliated with departments. The conversations we’ve had thus far are encouraging and faculty/staff engagement is high. I will summarize our efforts and key findings at the June 9th COE Faculty/Staff Meeting (1:30 pm).
Tomorrow is UO’s annual day of giving. More details can be found on the Ducks Give<https://ducksgive.uoregon.edu/coe> website and below. Please consider supporting our college initiatives as well as sharing these opportunities with your networks.
Please read on for updates, upcoming events, and accolades. In particular, I wish to draw your attention to the End-of-Year Student Wellbeing Check-In. Take a moment to reach out and check in with your students. While you’re at it, check in with yourself and your colleagues. Ducks care about one another.
Enjoy the sunshine! I look forward to crossing paths with each of you.
Warmly,
Laura Lee

* End-of-Year Student Wellbeing Check-in: Part of student success at the UO means students have a positive experience. Measuring wellbeing factors, especially belonging, throughout students’ trajectories at the UO is critical to understanding whether they have a positive experience. Please see the attached flyer and consider asking your students to complete an End-of-Year Wellbeing Check. There are many ways to do this:
* Email, Canvas, or Other Message: Here’s some text. Feel free to use it, edit it, or write your own entirely. And here’s this year’s URL if you want to insert it somewhere else: https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8wvaMUjheUPygES?Source=iaca2c.
* In-Class or Other Announcement: Here are some slides. Feel free to use them, edit them, or make your own entirely. And here’s this year’s QR code if you want to insert it somewhere else.
* Get Creative: If there’s some other way you want to communicate or if you want to offer extra credit, go for it.
Accolades:
* Jessica Turtura (PI) and Ben Clarke (Co-PI) along with partners at the University of Texas and Rand Corporation were awarded a five year 4 million dollar US Department of Education “Education Innovation and Research (EIR) Early-Phase award” for their project Math Ready-Supporting Early Number Sense (M-SENS). The purpose of the project is to develop, implement, and test an innovative, integrated program to improve student mathematics achievement while developing student behaviors that support success and accessing academic content. Working with participating kindergarten teachers, the project will use an iterative design science approach to develop and test the feasibility of the program. The project will conclude with a pilot study in 60 kindergarten classrooms designed to test the promise of the program to improve student math and behavior outcomes, and teacher capacity to support early mathematics and behavioral needs of students.

* A shout out to the student workers who prepared 275 tote bags with books and a gift for our Teacher Appreciation and New Teacher Send Off Event to be held on Friday. Thanks to Karielle Schnapp, Sora Thompson, Alex Pagnucco, Audrey Schlemmer, Sara Barth and Thomas Grigsby. It was definitely a team effort!
* Congratulations to Samantha Shune who was just awarded funding for an R21 through the National Institute on Aging entitled “Influence of swallowing impairment on burden among caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias”.
* Brief Abstract: Providing care for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) comes with significant physical and psychosocial costs, necessitating interventions to support caregivers’ health and quality of life. Yet, effective intervention requires a nuanced understanding of the factors that impact the burden along the care trajectory. Crucially underexplored in its contribution to caregiver burden is dysphagia (swallowing impairment), which occurs in up to 93% of persons with ADRD. With the goal of integrating proactive dysphagia-related caregiver burden reduction into standard clinical practices, this proposed Phase 0 research study will address the critical when (timing) and what (targets) needed for intervention design. Successful completion of this work will identify additional modifiable contributors to ADRD-related caregiver burden and potential mechanisms of action. The results will directly inform the development of a new, evidence-based intervention for reducing aspects of caregiver burden related to dysphagia management in ADRD and thus offer a unique opportunity to intervene with families earlier and proactively, ameliorating, and potentially even preventing, the development of these aspects of burden over time.
* Jeffrey Todahl and the Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect is featured in this Around the O article<https://around.uoregon.edu/content/report-sees-progress-battle-prevent-child-sex-abuse?utm_source=ato05-17-23> about the seven-year impact report which demonstrates overwhelmingly positive findings for Protect Our Children, the Ford Family Foundation’s child sexual abuse prevention project.
