Dear COE community,
March 1st is a big day, and not just because the end of winter term is in view and we can almost reach out and touch spring break. It's a big day because one year ago today, the University of Oregon announced a transformational gift of $425 million from Connie and Steve Ballmer, to create the Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health<https://childrensbehavioralhealth.uoregon.edu/>. Our College of Education leadership team, faculty, and staff have been busy partnering with the Psychology department and the newly formed Ballmer Institute to create a pathway to train a new profession of child behavioral health specialists. For the past year we have come together to develop curriculum, form leadership committees, develop policies, and hire faculty. The announcement of the Ballmer Institute was the impetus for a leadership change in the College of Education, as former dean Randy Kamphaus was appointed as acting executive director of the new institute and I stepped up to lead the College of Education in my role as interim dean. Today is my 1 year "dean-iversary". It is an honor and privilege that I appreciate every day.
Today, March 1st, 2023, is another epic day. Earlier this morning, the University of Oregon and the University of Oregon Foundation announced an exciting new effort to drive UO innovation and accelerate the creation of startup companies in Oregon and beyond. The UO and UO Foundation are forming a new partnership called Launch Oregon<https://www.launchoregon.com/> that will connect UO innovators to funding, leadership, talent, and infrastructure. This is timely work for the College of Education given our strong record of innovation, commercialization, and entrepreneurial activity. For example, the College of Education has 43 commercial education products on the market right now and we lead the university in licensing revenue. As an institution, UO ranks #1 in licensing per research dollar in the AAU. Research discovery and innovation is in our DNA. As this new non-profit entity is launched in partnership with UO and the Foundation, I'm honored to be a part of the Launch Oregon board. I have no doubt that the research discovers and innovation that is critical to our research and outreach mission in the COE will benefit from Launch Oregon and our collective work will have an accelerated impact on society.
Thanks to each of you for being a community of committed change agents and difference makers - for our students, for each other, for our community partners, colleagues, and more.
Happy March 1st. What will we do together next year?
With gratitude and appreciation,
Laura Lee
Updates and Upcoming:
* End of Term COE Faculty and Staff Meeting Postponed: The winter COE Faculty and Staff end of term meeting is being postponed and will now occur early spring term. Please save the date for Friday, April 7th from 1:30-3pm. More details, including an agenda, will be shared in advance of the meeting.
* Climate Survey Next Steps: On February 16th, COE Department Heads, Associate and Assistant Deans, and myself, attended a university-wide meeting on the topic of the recent UO climate survey. University units were provided clear next steps and expectations around their unit's climate survey data. In the coming days we will share some initial plans for involving the College of Education community in the next steps that have been outlined.
* Teacher Preparation Professional Development: Starting this week, our teacher preparation programs will be participating in a 3-part professional development series in partnership with the Center for Racial Justice in Education. The funds for these sessions were provided by the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) and the Educator Advancement Council (EAC). The sessions were opened to students and faculty in the COE's UOTeach and Special Education teacher preparation programs, as well as community partners and cooperating professionals in Lane County. The first session is this Friday March 3rd.
* Active Threat Training Opportunity: Safety and Risk Services will provide open trainings for active threats over the next three weeks. Safety & Risk Services has seen an increase in questions and requests for training since the MSU incident and the LCC alert last week. Due to the increase in requests, they are not able to provide department-specific trainings, but do have plans to host sessions in the next two weeks that will be open to people across campus. Individuals may register for one of five, in-person one-hour trainings here: https://uomytrack.pageuppeople.com/learning/3584<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/uomytrack.pageuppeople.com/learning/3584__;!!C5qS4YX3!AjPUgUbJFANLscYC2MRqDR9MoveRuTINk4YQykM2kvgM5324Bps81xhaM4Bc9Mi_C89lRaKDWEI02VW1MfRqpA$>.
