Dear COE community,

We've made it to Week 10 and the end-of-the-year is near. I wish to extend my gratitude to each of you - faculty and staff alike - for helping shape the year we've had. We don't (just) react or respond to our world, but we shape and inform our context and community. We all play a role in making our college a place where we can grow, establish connection and community, and thrive. I have appreciated the numerous conversations with faculty, staff, and students about our campus and college climate - areas in need of improvement as well as areas where we have seen improvement and growth. Underscoring these conversations is our need to feel safe, respected, seen, and appreciated. These sentiments are often expressed differently depending on our position, identity, and power - but are visible nonetheless. Thank you to those who have contributed to our conversations and discussions, including (and especially) the conversations that challenge the status quo. Many of our tanks are empty this time of year, but I appreciate what each of you gives. I also know that it is exhausting to give if it feels like our actions do not result in meaningful change.

As I look ahead, I feel optimistic about the growth we've experienced this past year and look forward to meaningfully engaging in action that improves our climate, our student experience, and our faculty and staff's professional quality of life. I welcome you to join me in our next planning steps. Our action planning will occur in the Fall, with a preliminary conversation this Friday in the COE Faculty/Staff meeting. Speaking of COE faculty/staff meeting, we're meeting in person in 220 HEDCO on Friday at 1:30 pm (Zoom option available, if needed). We will also be holding a picnic later that day (3:30-6pm), so please join us!

It's been a full, busy, and challenging year. Let's gather and celebrate the conclusion of the academic year.

Warmly,
Laura Lee

Updates and Upcoming:

We hope that you will take a moment to review the portal and become familiar with these resources and guidance dedicated to supporting incoming international students. The DGS shared the intent of the portal as directed to faculty and staff to: (a) to increase faculty and staff knowledge of and empathy for international grad students' experiences and needs as they transition to the U.S., (b) enhance advising and mentorship activities and (c) encourage students' use of the portal by reminding incoming students about the portal at each time point reflected on the portal. The portal is available now and will be useful for students (and advisors of students) arriving this Fall.
