Dear COE community,
Happy summer! I know some of you are enjoying a break from the busy cadence of the academic year and some of you (like me!) are in the thick of things. For programs like UOTeach and CDS, things are just as busy in the summer months as during the academic year. Many faculty and staff work to support students entering our doors for the first time over the summer. For the scores of COE faculty and staff with 12-month appointments, you never slow down. Whatever summer looks like for you, I sincerely hope that summer brings meaning and enrichment both personally and professionally.
This summer we have launched our new Ed Leadership Principal and Professional licensure programs. We have hundreds of new students enrolled and many incredible faculty and staff to thank! Huge appreciation to our program co-directors
Krista Parent and Julie Alonzo as well as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Sylvia Thompson for their outstanding leadership and vision. I also wish to thank Chris Krabiel, Jennifer McGovney and her team of fabulous APCs – Angela and Shannon – for their work ramping up and rolling out these licensure pathways for students. Finally, Adam Pritt and Jo Ann Arinder have been crucial partners with our e-learning and educational technology support needs. There are others that have contributed to this work, including scores of K-12 leaders and faculty who have contributed expertise to the launch of these new programs. The new Ed Leadership programs are a partnership with Coalition of Oregon School Administrators (COSA), which will allow the College of Education to expand our reach and broaden our impact. I’m incredibly grateful for opportunity to engage in this work and continue to grow our faculty, our K-12 partnerships, and importantly the number of students we serve.
The UO is undergoing exciting change, with a new President at the helm. I hope you have an opportunity to attend one of President Scholz’s meet and greets this summer. I’ll send out those announcements as I learn about the opportunities. And finally, the UO is searching for two new Vice Presidents – VP for University Communications and VP for Advancement. Excitement is in the air and there is renewed energy devoted to our academic mission, increasing student access, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, and maximizing our impact – regionally, nationally, and beyond.
Here in the COE, we are excited about change but also realize the importance of continuity. This Fall we will return to the important work of improving our campus climate through intentional action, courageous conversations, and strengthening our team through key hires. Many faculty (and some staff) will be invited to serve on search committees and other important service and leadership work. I thank you in advance for your important contributions. We are better when we are more inclusive and I appreciate the thoughtful input many of you have provided about our climate action planning.
For now, enjoy the summer months and all that the season brings.
Warmly,
Laura Lee
